OK I am going to find a mold and start casting for my 243. A couple of questions.

If I hold the vel down to 2100 or 2200 do i need a gas check? I am finding it hard to find a CONSTANT supplier of those.

COnversely, How fast can I push an unchecked boolit?
Last, where do I find, and (for paper) which mold old be best for a 9.5 twist browning?

Thanks in advance
Rob

Last, where do I find, and (for paper) which mold old be best for a 9.5 twist browning? Saeco 243 is a good one I shoot it in a 6MMBR 1:12

Thanks in advance

Just about anything in the 80-95 gr weight should do good
Check the group buy section at the bottom of the page(must register) to see if there are any for sale, if not I can spare a box of Hornady.

Try the LY 85 gr or the RCBS 95 gr for paper with a check. Use a starting load of 12 gr 2400 and you should find a sweet spot between that and 14 gr.

:coffee:The 85 gr. Saeco over 13.5 gr of 2400 out of my 77 Ruger will make one ragged hole at 50 yds that you could cover with a nickle. (10 rounds). The 85 gr. Lyman will do nearly as well, but not quite as tight for 10.

Shyoldman, I've had really good luck using a Lyman 245497 with either Trail Boss or Jacketed Starting loads of 4895. This is in a 6mm TCU. I have no idea what the speed is but I've had no leading with either powder. POI Is about 4" lower than Max Jacketed loads of the same weight at 100 yds. I know that at least one other shooter on here has had very good luck with the 245496 as well. Both of these are GC Loverin Style Boolits seated way out to keep the check in the neck with all grooves lubed. RD

IME the smaller the diameter of the boolit, the more the GC helps. I don't know why, but I kind of think any flaws in the base are magnified. Maybe I'm wrong, but yes, use the GC's!

For a velocity of 2100-2200 you WILL need a check. The best loads I have for my 243 are 19gr 4198 at about 2100fps and 16gr 4227 at about 2000. Lyman 245496, AC WW plus a little tin for good fillout, Felix lube, sized 244, seated to lightly engrave. No lead at all, and I have found best accuracy comes with only 2 grooves lubed. Both loads average 1 1/4" at 100 yds, but the two loads shoot about 3" apart.

If you need the speed you might try paper patching. Lot cheaper than checks.

Yeah, and a little less complicated also.
Doesn't matter what alloy you use.

I'm shooting the RCBS 95 SP at 1770 fps with 3/4" at 100yds. Am very happy with it.
I also have the 245496 but I aint played much with it yet. I am planning to this winter tho.

Don't really need the speed, was looking for recommendations, think I have them.
Thanks for the responses, I looked at Lyman's website and they don't list any 6mm molds. Where to look?

Thank again
Rob

Lyman doesn't make any 6mm molds anymore. You have to look around(E-bay, Gunbroker, forums, here), but Buffalo Arms still was listing a 2 cavity 245496 last time I looked, probably old stock. I prefer the RCBS 95 gr mold over 4759. Has been my best accuracy to date. You can still get the RCBS mold or the Saeco mold from most places.

Almost seems to me that somebody out in the hinterland put out the word that cast would not shoot in any 6mm. There is a bias for sure. Noted that lyman's last manual did not have a listing for cast. Also gas checks for 6mm is an issue and hard to come up with.

I use gas checks on my 243 Winchester castings (RCBS 95 SP), and run them about 1700 FPS with 12.0 grains of 2400. Not a 3/4" load, but will do 1.1" to 1.25" at 100 yards pretty reliably.

Hornady's site still shows the 6mm gas checks as being cataloged.

Ok found the RCBS , talked to Hornady about gas checks, they had 380 boxes in stock when I called, said the biggest customer was Lyman, 6mm was discontinued but not obsolete, so if got a big order would still make go figure

I believe that Blammer has had a couple of runs of 6mm Gatorchecks as well. Cost less than Hornady with comparable quality.
IIRC, Mike Mohler beat a lot of people in CBA matches last year with a .243...
