I'm browsing around on Midway and a few other sites just checking out scopes and various a sundry of things, when I decide to look at some bullet prices. Well I was a bit shocked, as I have not looked at them in a while.

I then started comparing the bullets I would have normally bought and shot if I were not casting.

The more I looked the bigger the grin got on my face, as I realized how much I was shooting compared to what I would have been shooting if I was only using jacketed or store bought cast bullets.

I know it's like preaching to the choir about things like this, but for all those new people and those who are just thinking about casting I came up with what I hope is a good idea.

I'm going to go and find about 3 bullets I would have normally bought and post the type and price (not including shipping) of it and then post what my comparable bullet is that I cast and how much I've shot of it. I'd encourage others to do the same.

Why? To show myself and others how many dollars worth of bullets I have cast and shot if I were buying comparable jacketed bullets.

I'm relatively new to the casting scene (only about 3yrs or so...) so for those who have been doing it since way before dirt was new you may not appreciate as fully the savings realized, as those who have just started on this entertaining waste of time, otherwise known as a hobby. :)

First up:

44magnum
At Midway
Cast Performance bullets 300gr lead Wide Flat Nose Gas Check box of 100 $40.49

My NOE 300gr LFN style wt

I've shot about 300 of these bullets so far and cast another 300 more.
About $240 worth of bullets so far... and this is my least used mould, so far....

7mm
At Midway
Remington Core-lokt bullets 7mm 140gr soft point Bulk priced 100/$20.49 500/$115.99

NOE 7mmHunter 150gr GC

I've shot 140 of these so far, have on hand another 250 or so
Let's assume 500 so I'll take the $115 cost. (I've only had this mould a few months... :) )

35 caliber
At Midway
Hornady XTP 180gr JHP box of 100 $17.99

NOE 360180gr

Shot about 400, cast another 400, gave away about 400 more, have 200 currently loaded ready to go
$251 worth approx. I can assure you, I would not have given away $72 worth of bullets if they were jacketed I had to pay for. :)

And if your shooting your jacketed through an old 7mm milsurp like mine with the .288 bore they wouldn't shoot worth a bleep...Ray

But in fairness you also need to at least add in the price of the mold, and if you buy your lead/alloy . . .

Still lots cheaper to cast, or put it this way, you get to shoot more for the same price . . .

But just for fun . . .

Remington Bullets 44 Caliber (430 Diameter) 240 Grain Jacketed Soft Point 500 - $99.99 I shoot the MiHec's version of 434640, a tad heavier . . . shot close to 500 already! the mold was $108, and I get my lead for free (well mostly, what little I have bought, gets recycled in the boolit trap many times!

Remington Match Bullets 38 Caliber (358 Diameter) 148 Grain Lead Wadcuttert 2000 - $114.99, I bought a used Lyman 38 148 DEWC on fleabay for $30 Shot way over 2000!

Remington Bullets 38 Caliber (357 Diameter) 158 Grain Semi-Jacketed Hollow Point 500 - $76.99, I bought a Mihec 359640 and have made close to 500 so far paid $108

Of course you need more equipment than just the mold, handle are nice, and so is a pot, and sizer . . . but I like being more self sufficient! and in the long run, it will be cheaper (I keep telling myself that!)

As I've learned, handles are not REALLY needed, but they help a bunch. :)
