Looking for opinions on the lightest weight cast gc boolit in .459 that you would consider shooting... lets say out of a Marlin 45/70 1895 GG for instance...

TonyM,
I have just started working with the RCBS 300 grain pattern in a Marlin 1895 and all early tests are very encouraging. With just a bit of research and care in loading I have already reached "minute of whitetail" accuracy buy am working to improve that standard. Casting ACWW, various charges of IMR4198, standard rifle primers. After exhausting the 4198 trials I will try other powders, always looking for that special formula that just cannot be improved. Good luck.

I have both a 463-300 GC and a 462-325 GC design. Both work well in the Marlin. I size both at 0.462 for my 45-70 Marlins. Your gun will do very well at 0.460 diameter and even better at 0.462. Check the ID of your fired brass. It will usually handle a 0.462 boolit and that size will fill the throat better. This allows very little room for the boolit to cant as it exits the case.

I'm currently working with a PB version of the 463-300 GC design. I made a 2C HP mold of it to play with. Cast from 50/50 WW-Pb, air cooled for 10 bhn, it does very well with 29.5 grains of SR 4759. 5-shot, 50 yard groups are running just below an inch from my "B0" serial # Marlin. I'm in the second stages of load developement and will be shooting this load in quantity at a bit farther difference. Trying to get a fairly soft, 100-150 yd deer load, that expands well.

+1 what BaBore said. Measure the inside diameter of a fired case from that rifle. I usually go with .001" under that diameter. You will see an improvement in accuracy.[smilie=w:

Also, I highly recommend his molds. The quality is second to none; and turn around time on orders is excellent. No waiting for "Group Buys" to come in based on a minimum # of orders. The cherrie is just sitting there waiting to cut the next order that comes in.

Hope this helps,

I like the 300 gr area too. Try 3031 in the rifle, great accuracy and a milder recoil then 4198.
BABore makes some of the nicest molds and the best boolits I ever seen.
I make my own molds and he has been a great help to me. He has sent some test boolits and I have pictures of his molds, I wish I could do such fine work!
I have to complain a little about his 420 gr HP out of my BFR 45-70. Super accurate but I lost an entire shoulder at boolit exit on a nice doe. WOW! :bigsmyl2::bigsmyl2:

Moral of story: Don't shoot nice doe in shoulder with HP boolit. Three ribs back. Bang - Flop.

I have an old Ideal mold for a .457" 180gn HB that I like for 22ish loads.

Which one is that, the 401? I've been looking for a 457195.

Don't forget the round ball. Paco Kelly has done a lot of work with round balls and they work very well from silent loads to high speed screamers.

I have been working with the RCBS 300 gr fpgc in my .458 Win. Very promising results. Nice mould and easy to cast with. Kicks a heckuva lot less than the 500gr.

I kind of cheated with this. I can take any .45 bullet and make it .458. I have a round nose swaging die that is .458. All I do is run whatever .45 bullet up into it and bump it to .458. Since I'm only going from a minimum of say....451 to .458. There is no problem if the lead is hard or soft. The only issue is the nose of the billet will get reshaped a bit if it doesn't match the nose of the swaging nose punch.

Has anyone paper patched an ACP bullet?

Yes and they were all over the place. Keyholes and flyers. Frustrating!

Best to patch a soft cast boolit at about 0.454" with 9 lb onionskin (~0.002" thick). Smaller sized boolits need thicker paper. Longer bearing surface lengths help here as do 0.462" patched diameters.
