Hi Guys,
I took this small mulie a couple days ago......one shot kill with my buffalo classic 45-70.......the boolit was RCBS's 405 (420 grain with WW alloy) cast of annealed wheel weight......around 9BHN...velocity was about 1600FPS......90yards or so broadside heart shot.....the deer managed about 35 yards before tipping over.

Very nice Stomp! Congratulaions. Nice bit of photography too. I was bowhunting tonight and saw 2 young whitetail bucks (a 4 pt & a spike in velvet) and a hog, but no shot. Can't wait until I can fling lead at them next month.

Congrats, that looks like a nice meat buck.
That bullet just punch a 45 cal hole or did it come out bigger?

Thanks guys,
The boolit made a .45cal hole going in split the heart about halfway up and made an inch and a half hole through the ribs going out......the hole in the hide was smaller than that though maybe just less than 3/4inch.

45stomp,

Classic caliber, classic bullet design and I also note your very classic hunting jacket! Looks like you should be in the Pennsylvania or Maine woods after whitetails!

Nicely done sir!
I also have to comment on the VERY classy rifle.
The hunting coat is terrific as well. Both look like they'd fit right in at a north woods hunting camp.
Great deer too. Excellent choice. Those of us who like to eat them know that's the perfect size. I can almost smell the liver and onions frying up...

Very nicely done and I also have to comment on a real nice sporty gun. Good shootin!

Our deer hunts start Oct. 10th but I drew for bull elk in one of my favorite zones which starts Oct. 25th.

I agree on the hunting coat. I wish some manufacturer, would make a plaid of this type, in heavy wool, with a couple hundred square inches of blaze orange in the pattern. I dislike the solid orange, and have worn a camo type blaze hooded sweatshirt for years. Anyone know of a source for a plaid with blaze?

Was that a black powder load or smokeless? Also, what kind of sights are on your rifle. Thanks.

Smokeless. I think 1600FPS may be a bit faster than black could push a 420 out of the 45-70......the load was 100% load density(to the bullet base) of H4350 over a mag federal match primer.......ya I know that is a wierd load......and yes it does leave some unburned powder in the bore but it shoots really well, and as a side benefit you can't accidentally double charge the case[smilie=1:

Nice going on the deer and the rifle.

...and if I may be so old as to reply for you on the sights: they are the factory Williams peep rear and Lyman 17A front (globe).

Nice deer 45! What model Harrington and Richardson is that?

As to the blaze gear, don't some of the camo makers make blaze camo gear? I'm sure I've seen it in cabela's catalogue.

My mate's wife has a really cool looking blaze camo jacket. I'll buy one just like it if I ever find one.

For what it is worth, those rifles sure seem to shoot very well. I've recently come into one, and have proceeded to set mine up to do gong/buffalo shoots. Put a tang sight on the wrist and new inserts for the front, I'm good to go!!! Especially when one considers what I have tied up in the rifle as opposed to a new Pedersoli or Shiloh.

How much does one cost in real world retail dollars? I'd like a .45/70 but think I'd rather have a single shot than a Marlin right now...

Sorry I forgot to mention the sights:roll: The rear is the factory installed williams peep sight (can't remember the model right now) the front is a sight that I made with a large ivory bead.....here's a pic of the sight
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v486/45stomp/DSCN0790.jpg
The front globe sight will not work with any load I tried as it is too tall so unless H+R has changed the specs plan on changing one of the sights to get a combo that works.
Reguarding the price.....I paid less than $500 canadian for mine new......it's a whole lotta gun fer the $$:-D
