After a number of long waits between every step of ordering, receiving, and picking up my rifle.... I finally was able to pick up my Marlin 45-70 from my FFL today at lunch time. It sure is a nice looking rifle.

I guess I had better stop procrasinating, fire up the new mold, and load up some for this weekend -- a nice selection from "mild to wild" :)

Congrats! If Marlin would just get the XS sight rail and sights in stock, I would be happy.

Good morning
Oh the fun of another Caliber 45 ! Remember to slug the throat... you sure do not want to go lead mining right off.

By an RCBS 45-405 GC mold, size it .459 or .460 is you have a sizing die that large. Use ACWW and the right powder chage and you Marlin levergun will do tricks for you. If you enjoy tinkering and fiddling and have a tolerance for failure and frustation, ingnore the above and go another route.

2400 and 4759 for 1.2 to 1.5 K fps loads. 3031 for anything above 1.5 fps.

The above is a sure-fire formula for sucess with your rifle.

I a grew with Chargar except I use either a 405 plain base group buy bullet or a ranch dog bullet. Size to 460 and use 2400 for lower velocity loads. I have used numerous powders for heavy loads, all have worked. Never used 3031 though.
I find this to be a vert forgiving rifle to load for, it seems to shoot well with almost anything.

Enjoy it.

I finally got my GBL dressed out. I may put a Ultradot on it and will put it a little farther forward if I do. The cheek piece is from Cabelas and I really like them on my lever guns. It gives me a solid cheek weld.

The rail and peeps are from XS Sights like the ones on the SBL. I also have a threaded post and an adjustable Merit objective for the rear. I feel like the heavy ring on the Merit makes it easier to see in dim light, plus I can change the size of the hole in the rear peep.

In Texas you can hunt pigs at night with a light. I may put a light on my gun like I did with my AR15. Go to the bottom of the page to see the mount..

Try the Lee 405 grain HB mold . It is larger than the other Lee molds .

Marlins like large bullets . We honed the Lee .457" die to .460" .

I bought one of the NOE 460-350 moulds and love it! There should still be a few available, or you may be able to get Ranch Dog's mold. The main difference between them is conventional vs TL lube grooves.

congrats on your new marlin ! you are gonna have a blast with it. if your like me you will want some fairly wild[[1600 fps +]] loads and a lot of mild loads to tinker and play with.

the heavy loads will and do put the whamo on just about anything you aim at out to 150--175 yds but they will be unpleasant from the bench[[[for me anyway]]]. im just starting to aquire all the stuff to give blackpowder a try in my marlins [[[ i have 3 now and a sharps reproduction ]]]. cant wait to fire a cloud of smoke thru mine and tinker with the little stuff that makes them tick.

have fun with yours as i know i enjoy mine a ton.

I also have one of those NOE moulds and I admit that it's a fantastic product.

Like you, mine is a GBL and I've loaded up 40 of the NOE 350's for it. 20 @ 1400fps and 20 @ 1800fps.

Can't wait to try them. :)

snapping twig,,, i installed a limbsaver on mine [ sbl ] im 6 foot 6 inch and the short butstock bucks me pretty hard as well as being uncomfortable .this with weaver mts n rings i also put a leo 2 to 7 power ...this with the sling she is a giant of a rifle. i loaded some 350's at 1600 fps and i gotta say that of all my other marlins...this little hummer ate them with ease and the felt recoil was very tolerable indeed. im gonna find some 500's for it that will sling thru the action and give them a try...should be a hoot and a reliable bar keller

Ted, on my best day I'm 5'9", so it fits me pretty good in factory form and I must admit the recoil pad is a soft one.

Maybe tomorrow I'll get to run a few down the barrel, see what all the whoopin and hollerin is about. :)

You haven't lived until you have touched off a 1895 Marlin and let loose a 500gr paper patch boolit at 1800fps. I have the first year of production 1895,the predecessor of the "Guide Guns" and no it ain't for sale :D Enjoy that thing.

I've got a 425g mould on the way from our group buy and I plan on sending a few of those off north of 2000fps.

Does that work?

Yes... I plan on getting a 500g mould one day as well.

Nice looking setup on that rifle Crabo.

Snapping Twig - we probably have the same mold on the way. I combined GC and PB cavities, and want to send some of the GC boolits downrange pretty fast too.

Randy, I put my happy trigger in tonight and it went 3# without any moly grease on it. What a difference. Made me happy.
