Guys, I'm planing to start reloading 300 WinMag cartridges for my Mauser M96.
I have Lee mold C312-185-1R which I use for another rifle. I know that I can size this boolit, but I'll ask for your opinion for suitable molds and boolits for this caliber.
I'll use the boolits for hog hunting.

Well 311 - 200,

I have a 300winmag, and have had a number of others, so my comments has nothing to do with not liking that round.

But, I wonder at why when using cast boolits.

if it is just to get trigger time with that rifle, with a minimum of cost, OK, I understand that.

However, if it is for serious cast boolit use for hunting or target work a much better and smaller case such as the .308 or 30/06 will give you all the velocity reasonably obtainable with cast bullets and at less cost in brass, powder etc.

And although there are folk on this forum that obtain good hunting results with the 30 caliber cast boolits the most commonly followed wisdom tends to dictate a larger piece of lead.

Maybe some folk who hunt hogs with the smaller calibers will sound off with their results, but IMHO I would want something with a minimum of .35 and much better yet would be .45 dia.

Keep em coming!

311-200;

Crusty has the right of it; get something along the lines of a 308 and feed it a good solid 200+ grain bullet over enough mid-range powder to give it 2000+ ft/sec.

If I were to consider the game you are I'd simply get out my converted Marlin 1895, rebarrled from 45/70 to 40/65, load it with Lyman 312263 and go hunting!

However, I have had excellent performance in the 300 WM with NEI 308-178-GC (Lyman look-alike 311041) and things like 24 grains 2400 or 24 grains 4227.

Good evening,
Forrest

PS; Is that a M96 Swedish Mauser rebarreled to 300 Mag? An unusual conversion for sure.

Thank's for the reply.
I will use this caliber because this is the rifle which I have for big game.
In my country (Bulgaria) the big calibers are not so popular. In fact a week ago the goverment decided to give permission to the hunters and benchrest shooters to reload own cartridges at home !
There was a big figth in the parliament because the comunist party was against the reloading!
Most of the hunters even don't know the possibility to do cast boolits at home and to reload their own cartridges.

I have that mold and use it for most of my 30-31 caliber rifles. I have not tried it in the .300 Win Mag, but it should work okay; as long as it is properly sized for the rifle.
