I got out to the range tonight with my .30-06 and a few loads with the 311284 and 311299 bullets that Lee and Carl sent me. My gun hates the 311284, at least with Reloder 7, and it kicks like a mule!!! The 311299 shot very nicely with 27 gr. of 4227, 5 shots made one big hole at 50 yds. Now I need to stretch it out to 100 and see what that load does, and try a different powder with the 311284.

try IMR3031 with the 311284.

I haven't got any 3031 right now and really no other use for it. I'd rather find a powder that I have in the inventory and run with that. I have some other good options that are listed in the Lyman manuals, Varget, N133, 4895, 4227. I'll try all those first. :) But thanks for the tip!

Can't go wrong with 4895 and Varget should work well too. These two powders are better reserved for mid/max loads as that is where you will see them perform their best.

Try 29gr H322 with the 311284.

..............Did you try the nose of the 311284 in the muzzle of your rifle to see if it truly 'rides the lands'?

If you look at the CBA match results you will see 2400 and 5744 to be the most used powders in the 30-06.No need to pump them up if just shooting at 100- 200 yards at targets.
Try 15-16 of 2400 with the 311284.Like Buckshot says the nose may be small depending on what vintage it is.My old Ideal single cav. version with a .297 nose shoots well if velocity is 1500 or better if below that.My 4 cavity has a nose barely over .299 but does well at 1650 in 2 groove Springfields.

Hodgden says you can go to 70% max with H4895 for safe reduced loads.

My Garand loves 32 grains of Varget behind the Lee version of the 311299. Cycles the action, 1" group at 50 yards if I do my part. Mild recoil.

I'll never understand why so many people think they need to use popcorn fart loads with heavy boolits and pistol powders in the .30-'06.

The 311284 is very heavy and needs big boy powder, like 4350 or even slower in longer barrels if you want to get nice, gentle launch and decent velocity. I've had good luck with that boolit and H4350 and IMR 4831 pushing it pretty hard.

If you want mild, accurate loads use the 2400 or Unique and 150-grain boolits.

I agree, Gear! Does not make any sense at all considering the probability of a dangerous outcome. ... felix

Sorry, slower powders with heavy 30-06 bullets are not always the way to go for accurate loads.

This is the first report of the 311284 not shooting I have ever seen. It has a fine reputation as a rule.
