Mike--

The 30-30 WCF cartridge was just about "built" for any of the 4895s, cast or jacketed applications, full-tilt or moderated velocities.

Lyman #311041 was purpose-designed for the caliber, and works well in my late-70s Model 94. #311291 does well also, and the Lee Soup Can (113 grain FP) is a good choice too.

The 30-30 is just plain LEAD-FRIENDLY, maybe the most lead-friendly 30 caliber extant.

AA 2495, IMR 4895, Hodgdon H335, 322, Win 748, IMR 3031.. are all good.. for light stuff, Red Dot, Trailboss, Unique, SR 4759, and XMR5744 are good for reduced power cast loads..

My favorite J word load for 30-30 is a 150 with 31.0 gr of H335. There are book loads of all the powders above in various places (Hodgdon web site for instance).

Is 4895, or an equivalent, ever a bad choice?

I say go for it. Should work pretty well.

Mike
I have been using H4895 in a 30-30 with 175 to 190gr boolits. The best load I have found so far has been 28-30gr. My barrel has a 10 inch twist. have had good results out to 300yds. A load of 28gr with a 190gr boolit measured at just over 1600fps.

Have tried the NOE 311440 but accuracy has not been as good as the heavier boolits at 100yds.

Hi Mike,,
although I agree that IMR 4895 is really a good choice of powder....I have been getting good results with WIN 748 / 28.2 grains....pushing a 180 (#311291)...sized at 0.309
in a Savage model 340
at 100 yds I am consistantly within a 1.5" dia. circle

180gr with a g c atop 20gr 4227 hits where you want -- knocks over a Ram at 200 meters in the blink of an eye out of a T/C 10" barrel.

ok my first questtion any reason to not try aa2495(thier version of 4895) ??? Nope. With the boolit weight and velocity you mentioned that's one of the first powders I'd try (actually IMR or H 'cause I can't get AA powders locally).

i have an 8 lber looking for something to do........ Well put it to work!

other than that...what fits above the gun is a win 94 (1965) 20" open sights...may go to peep...but its just a plinking gun.......You might try a tang sight for longer ranges, or just get a smaller front bead sight. If your eyes are bad for open sights, I wouldn't make fun of you for using a side-mount scope base and an Ulradot, or even replace the rear sight with a compact pistol red-dot sight.

and then i may try the 311359 for a lite load or the above just slower... If you want light, you might just use Unique or 2400. Probably be cleaner than the AA 2495. If you want to really zing that little 311359 (single-loaded, of course) go ahead and pour the 2495 to it, I know that the H4895 I used once with the 115 grain Lyman GC (32-20) was great for dinging gongs at 300 Meters with very little elevation adjustment, but I never chrono'd the load.

Like others have said, it's a lot harder to build a load that doesn't shoot well in the .30-30 than it is to make good ones.
