Hey all...
I had an Elderly Gent in his 80's, give me two 150lb rolls of lead alloy. He said he didn't think it was pure, and he bought them in the late 50's.

It's grooved lead channel, I guess you would call it, and it's on a spool. It was used in art glass work, and was used to make stained glass windows. Any idea what it may be? I won't be able to pick it up ,till ' this weekend......

Thanks. Caspar

Caspar,

What you have is lead Came used in Stained Glass panels, Would you consider tradeing a spool for some Isotope lead? Katie has started doing Stained Glass. Some of it may be pure or it is Frame Came which is harder, Do you know the size, Width and height?

That stuff is pure lead and very good for muzzle loaders etc. I messed with stained glass during the 70's and that stuff was not cheap then nor is it now.

The stained glass shop that I saw used 50/50 solder and the challels were tinned copper.

If it was used for stain glass soldering you have yourself 300 lbs of 50/50 Tin/Lead. Figure to insure it for about $1,000 And be prepared to have new friends. PM me and i can help you with this problem.
Making bullets out of it would be a waste. Use it for trading .

Absolutely. Take up Muddy Creek's offer unless you are into stained glass.

Randyrat,

It is not solder, it is lead that goes around the glass and is soldered together with 50/50 solder.

There is an article in the 2011 Gun Digest on how to analyze bullet alloys.

Is there any other reason to buy a 2011 Gun Digest? I haven't been too impressed lately.

You got the stuff for free. cut some change loose and get a Lee hardness tester and your questions will be answered. It is a good tool too.

Go grab it. Because no matter what it is you're definitely going to come ahead. You can figure out what it is later. LOL

Try scratching it with your fingernail. If it scatches easy it is very soft lead which it probably is. I got about 300# a few years ago of old and new remanants and melted them into ingots for MLs.

The stained glass channel that I've seen was pure lead, but what Sam says about the outer frame stuff being harder makes sense.

If I were you, I'd take Sam up on his swap offer. The lead that he has is plenty good & if he has a use for the channel as it is, then there should be motivation for a deal that is good for both of you.

First off, Many thanks to all who responded..

I got out today to pick up my loot, and we dug around for a while, could only find one roll, and it's about 125l lb's. he's gonna look around and find the other,as he said he saw both in the same place about 2 years ago.

I got one sealed roll of about 125lbs, and I pulled the paper away and looked at a small piece, and I belive it's pure. I was hoping for some tin mix, but I'm happy........

goste,

My offer still stands to to trade 95-2.5-2.5 or 96-3-1 or a mix of the two for one of the rolls. I'll pay the freight.

Sam..... If the man finds the other roll, I may give you a holler..I found a paper tag inside the extremely weird stuff its wrapped in...Its round lead came #16...I don't know what the #16 means.... The tag was dated 1971...

Sam, Just went out and looked, as it's still on the back of my flatbed, and its two sided. It's on a wooden spool, thas wrapped with paper and something that looks like swamp fan cooler pad

goste.
It doesn't matter if it is pure or two channel or one. You have a manufactured product that is worth more than its melt value. Be smart, trade it.
