Tried to catch a boolit today..

It didn't work! I was using a 45 70, 410 gr, clip on WW air cooled +3% tin, BHN 14 at 1750 fps. At 50 yards impact velocity was about 1640. It went through a wet phone book( about 6" wet expanded) and six half gallon water filled milk cartons gashing the seventh while veering off. Same thing heat treated it punched through the book and 12 milk cartons and kept on trucking. The AC boolit exploded the 6 cartons showed some expansion, the HT shot a .45 hole through everything. I am looking for a suitable alloy for Elk, most of the shots are close thats why I tested at 50 yds. Anyone think the ACWW will be lacking in penetration or any other way (to soft ect)? Thanks John

Hee, Hee, we shot through 14 jugs with a revolver! Boolit kept on trucking too.
You need a little expansion with the velocity so add a little pure lead and HT. Air cooled might be OK though with what you are using.
Don't worry about penetration, it will work, just worry about what the boolit does in the animal before it comes out the other side and goes into the next county! :bigsmyl2:

Yeah, a 300grLFP @ 1000fps from my 45colt will go through 20" of wetpack (no expansion). More wetpack! I haven't even tried my 350grLFP @ 1600fps yet.

I'm thinking that the AC WW will be JUST FINE on elk.

I used a 405 Remington soft point on several large African animals with excellent
results at 1750 fps. These are a good bit softer than AC WWts, you'll do well if
you put it in the heart-lung area. Be careful of your backstop! ;-)

penetration with a 45/70 is NOT an issue! last year, the whitetail i shot, the bullet went full lenght through the animal. it hit high on the right front shoulder, and continued all the way through and exited just to the side of the anus. i dont know if it was hydraulic shock that killed it, or the massive wound channel. it was not a great shot, but it is the only one i was going to get. the deer dropped in its tracks.

With penetration like that just make sure that the elk are not lined up behind one another or you will get both with one shot.

I figure it'll go through a moose end to end.

I'd have to save phone books for a decade to get 6 inches worth. Rubber crumb mulch wil stop boolits if you have enough of it. It won't show expansion though.

I think your ACWW will do fine, think about all the bison that were killed with softer lead and less velocity.

Thanks all. I was worried the high impact velocity would over stress the boolit. I want to see what it looks like so next week I will try more milk cartons, think I have 20 left and back that up with some other material.

MK 42, I found the grocery store has phone books near customer service with the free papers/ car sale magazines ect. I grab a few every now and then.

I use wet news paper. it stacks up faster than I can shoot it. a waxed cardboard box from the produce dept full of news print should stop it! cantalope boxes are about 24" long. DR

Any access to deep water tank or pool? a nice 15' pool will give you a place to recover - had part will be finding a vertical tower 150 foot above it.
