Fellow black powder shooters.

I stated on another thread a while back that I couldn't get my Uberti Highwall
45-70 to shoot consistantly. I said that I would elaborate on it when I decided to
pick it back up and continue with the unending agrivation of patterns rather than
groups. Well, here I am.
In my loading over the past couple of years, I really liked the looks of all the
grease grooves covered. Not only their asthetics, but also the the fact that the
foreign particals woulds not get sucked up be the exposed grease and get
pushed down my prety bore.
Now, I am not the best in the world at keeping notes and data of my reloading
escapades. That being said, somewhere along the line I switched from the
Lyman 457132 Postell to the Lyman 457125. I thought I had fit the latter to
bump the rifeling as we are supposed top do. All grease grooves covered, good
lookin reload, very meticulously put together. RIGHT? Bad groups:shock:
I decided to recheck the the bullet to rifleing again. Well, I was surprised to say
the least. After starting fresh, butting the front band into the rifeling, I had been
seating the 457125 boolit .165 toooooooooo deep with my original loads
I started all over. I dumped 75 grains of Goex Cartridge down my vibrating drop
tube. I used a .030 card wad and compressed .150 to get the proper boolit fit to
the rifeling. I put one newspaper wad on top of the opw and seated the boolit.
When I got done, the round was UUUUGGGLY. I had one and one half grease
grooves showing. But, the fit was right.
Fast forward to the range. After adjusting the sights at 50 yards, I moved to the
100 yard. I fired 6 shots each at two targets. The bore was fouled 3 shots from
the 50 yard sighters. First target, 5 shots in the ten ring at .810" centers, 1 shot
of 6 pulled out to 1.800". No blow tubing.
I wiped the barrel and repeated but used the blowtube. 6 shots 1.4" centers.
The rounds are not as streamlined, and they may catch a little debris once in a
while, but boy do they shoot.
I never could accept that it was my shooting ability, and I was right.
It was my lack of attention to the details. The Uberti is a keeper.
Good loading to you all.

Jack I'm glad you and that rifle finally came to an understanding. It's been a long time coming and well deserved.:bigsmyl2:

Thanks Don.
It would have been a lot longer coming had it not been for you and a few of the other BP experts sharing your vast expierience. Thanks to all of you.

I was terrible about keeping notes with smokeless loads but you can get away with it to some extent. With BP no notes no consistency. I once thought that I wouldn't go through all of the steps that I now go through but the addiction makes you do it.:drinks:
