We are headed to the lake for the weekend to camp on the boat and do a little fishing.

I tried to get as much done as I could here, and there's of course loose ends, but I have got to take a break.

I'm getting burnt out and going a bit nuts and I NEED to get out of here. If I don't I'm not going to be much good for anybody. Have not had the boat in the water, or got away for a long, long time.

last Saturday did an oil change and put a new pump impeller in the old Mercruiser outdrive. Put a new water pump on the engine and cleaned her up some.

..............I really like boats especially when someone else owns'em :-), and being on the water, but you can keep that fishing stuff! However useable water here in So. Cal is far away and there's too much time involved in simply getting to it:roll:

Remember the Hawians say that the Great Kahuna does not deduct time spent fishing from ones lifetime. Looks like a nice boat.

Do you think that is wise Pat? You, know. Given your recent adventures in the outdoors with mice in your truck. I think you should stay indoors!

I am having the same kind of #%$@&*%$# weekend. Didn't get any sleep--had to listen to the darn radio last night. Lost the dam plunger tube spring on the 45 ACP, took two hours to find it--correction--Julie had to find it. Still got 3 cord of wood to split, little dog took out after a Moose and it's raining all day.
So yes come and pick me up and I will cut the bait, if not have a great time and catch a lot of fish.

There are times I go fishin to catch fish and other times I go fishin to fish.

At this point, I need to go fishin to fish. At creek bank and a can of worms sounds good to me now. Enough stress at work to make wish I was at home and enough stress at home to make me wish I was at work. Danged the skeeters and sting neetles, A squirrel hunt might also improve my mood.

The silhouette match is next Sunday. Maybe after the match I will have some decompression time by compressing a couple o' trigger springs.

Pat,
I'm glad you took the opportunity to take the boat out.
a fishin' trip sounds like a great way to charge your batteries.
I hope all goes well.
If you're on Salmon waters, catch one for me:-)
I loves me the salmon.

I hear you Pat!

A few loose ends to tie up and if my wall tent frame kit gets here tomorrow I am outa here. May just go without the tent. Going north of Winnemucca to do some doe pronghorn scouting and look for deer for later while I am there. 4 day road trip if I can stand the heat that long. I need to get up high where it is cooler. No fish this trip, but late next week...northern pike at Ely! and maybe some cow elk scouting north of Elko.

Update-

Got back.

What was to be a simple trip turned out to be another ordeal. We loaded up the boat and got out of here. Stopped in Redding to fuel up and when I did a walk around I found this:

http://www.patmarlins.com/1rust.jpg

THAT is the tongue of the boat trailer clean rusted through. What was a solid tongue when I left home- had holes in it, and was hanging on by a thread.

Luckily, I have a close friend in Anderson just a few miles away who has a shop on his walnut farm. Called but no answer so we limped over there, and found no one home.

That was Sunday evening. I unhooked and we drove back home- 2hrs away to stay the night, pic up steel, tools, and whatever else I needed. Finally got my buddy on the phone who was out of town with his wife and he told me where his hide-a-key was so at least I didn't have to bring my tanks and welder back down.

Headed back down the next morning and I made the cut pictured. That was new 1/4" x 4" box tubing I installed in 2004 that rusted inside to about 1/6"... That's the only box tubing on the whole trailer, and salt water got in there and did it's job well.

Anyway- got it patched up and repaired and we made it to the lake Monday night. You think I could have got away just once without another fire to put out, but noooo...

I thank the lord that the [6000 lb]boat didn't come loose. Someone could have been killed and we would have lost everything.

Was so exhausted I only fished one night a little. Got a few small cats and threw them back. Did a lot of glassing with my 16x50's during the day and resting. There's a lot of wild life on Lake Shasta ...

They say a change is as good as a rest but neither is as good as a fishing trip. Glad things got repaired.

Good to hear no person was hurt. :holysheep

What turned out to be an inconvenience for a weekend fishing trip will actually turn out to be a neat story to tell friends and family for years to come.

You may vaguely recall other fishing trips, but you'll always remember this weekend get-a-way!

Remember Pat, it;s about the fishin not the fish[smilie=s:.

Had the same thing happen to a friend that was following me to Powell a few years back. Glade no one was hurt!

Me, too!! It has been about a month since I have been out in the Gulf -- the heat has jsut been too much down here ... boat/trailer at shop getting trailer serviced ... shop called today and said the bolts that hold the calipers on had rusted pretty bad and they would have to cut them off!! It is crazy not to use S.Steel for a saltwater trailer ... OH, well - the wife and I plan on hitting the Off-shore islands sometime late next week ... I just love to be out on the water!!

Nice-

Looks like a Grady?

Yaw- I need a new trailer built out of 6" galvanized channel. Steel will hold up if you can get the hose to it, and water is not able to accumulate. Box tubing is the worst. At least the rest of my old trailer is all channel.

Saltwater EATS everything it touches, for certain. I'm pretty religious about washdown after saltwater exposure, but metal corrosion isn't something you can eliminate in the salt--just delay and manage.

I've only had the boat in the salt twice this summer, and did a one-day cattle boat trip south of the border. Total catch has been one (1) bonito. The pelagic species have largely avoided local waters due to abnormally cold temps all year, so far. There's some hope that the hurricane down south will break the cold water up some, so I have my fingers crossed.

I have hit the Sierras a bit, and nailed some trout in Grant and Silver Lakes on the June Loop. The july and August crowds discourage fishing, though--I wait until mid-September for the trout to go on the warpath again near Bridgeport. Of course, if the yellowtail and albacore show up--I'll have some choices to make! That would be a very good "problem" to have.

For you boat fans out there-

My pride and joy is a "SkipJack-20", a southern California offshore design by acclaimed designer and boat builder Jack Cole. He originally designed this boat for his family trips out to the Catalina Islands. Skipjack still makes this model (or at least they did a few years back) current selling price new is near $50,000. Skipjack also makes larger offshore yachts.

I have the open cruiser model circa 1968 powered by a Mercruiser Model one I/O drive and 292 Chevy inline 6 cylinder. One barrel carb. It has a range of 150 nautical miles. Top speed 30mph.

It's a very stable boat for it's length of 20'8". All hand laid heavy matt fiberglass craft with heavy stringers and rides like a Cadillac. I've had it out in very rough seas.

It has a cuddly cabin with bed, front deck hatch, and storage, plus full porcelain marine head that pumps out through hull to the sea.

I rescued it from sitting in a field- rewired and restored it mechanically, and fixed up the interior and cutty. Now has 3 downriggers, Cat 3 epirb, chart plotter/gps/sonar, ship to shore marine radio, safety ditchbag with flare gun, 3 immersion suits. 18hp Nissan kicker w/250 mile range. Bilge alarm system and more. Hope to add T-Top with raft someday.

Can you drill a few holes in the bottom of the box steel? is will drain better, but you still gotta be able to flush it somehow . . .

I like eating fish, not so much the catching . ..

PatMarlin
08-27-2010, 12:27 AM
Yep- I'm going to cut some slots in it, and be able to flush it from front to back.
