Has anyone done any work with the 25-06 in the realm of 2500 fps? I realize .25 caliber molds are disappearing but there's still a few out there in the 100 grain neighborhood that could land in my hands. Gaschecks in .25 cal. are still readily available and based on my fiddling in QuickLoad there should be several powders that'll produce HV at 35-40K PSI. Am I going off the track? I've had all kinds of success with a 1:10" 30-30 (.300/.310" four groove ol' Ballard 336) at speeds exceeding 2400 fps and I'm ready for the next level of boolit performance; i.e., busting varmints at long range with carefully crafted, hand poured projectiles. :bigsmyl2:

Lymans Cast Bullet Handbookhas some impressive velocities for the .25-06.ther eis supposed tobe a new volume coming out soon. Hopefully with data for current powders.

mk42 is right about the lyman books 25-06 data, some of the lyman 257 molds are pretty sweet too, so you sou should buy one and send me a few to test in my 250 savage.

Well, we'll see what we can find out there.

I don't really worry about data as long as I have QuickLoad (sure wish it included 4759 though). I worry more about spending hundred of dollars and winding up limited to a measly couple thousand feet per second with one or two boolits that occasionally eek out 1 MOA on a good day.

I'm considering a 26" barrel for my H-R just to get an idea of what might be possible with a serious investment. I even called NEF today to find out when their 25-06 barrels might become available.

I have a 25-06 that shots a group under three quarters of an inch but the load only moves at 2000 or so. Its an 85 grain from a groupe buy here several years back and its very sweet with 6 cavities. If you want to try a few send me a pm and I will send you some to try. Its a fun rifle to shoot at long range.

I'd take you up on the offer if I already owned a 25-06. :(

In the mean time, here's a few questions for ya:

What's your Group Buy mold's designation and load spec's? Please include your boolit's BHN and the barrel configuration on your 25-06.

Thanks,
MJ

With air cooled wheel weights plus a little tin, Lyman 257464, I start to get some light leading at a little over 2200fps. I started out only lubing 3 grooves with Felix lube, and as the leading is at the muzzle, lubing all the grooves may permit some more speed. My wife is having some medical problems, which is taking up a lot of my time, so I don't have that mold completely wrung-out yet.

Assuming your rifle is a 25-06 with a 1:10 twist and .250/.257 6-groove barrel, if you want to go faster, shoot a .258" heat treated boolit (at least 450F with a cold water quench... later you can add some Pb so you can get the temp up to 500F) and use BAC to lube as usual. I'm pretty sure using more of the same lube is not going to get you better accuracy at the higher velocity. Naturally, you'll want to select a powder that won't develop much more than 35K PSI for your first trials. I'd also prefer to turn the furnace up to 750-800F and leave out the Sn all together for your first heat treating trials.

not with the 2506 but ive pushed .30 cals that fast in the 3030 without problems. I casted them out of 5050 ww/lineotype air cooled lubed with corduba red and then tumble lubed.

I've pushed my 257 roberts to 2500 or thereabouts with H414SL and CBE's .25790 ww + 2% tin water dropped, hand lubed with Canadian Tire Moly Grease. Accuracy was nothing special, but there was no leading. I don't see a problem achieving the velocity, but good accuracy could take a lot of work.
