.50 Hush Puppy, .50 Razorback -- anyone got any detailed specs on these? Anyone shooting them or somewhat familiar with them?
www.deltacompanyarms.com

The site's in forum member 82nd airborne's signature. I'm just curious about their parent cases and where they fit in in the spectrum of shorter big-bore calibers.

I'll probably start up wikipedia pages for them too.

Wikipedia stubs, pending approval.

I'm interested how the .50HP compares to the .50Beowulf, .458SOCOM et al, and how the .50 Razorback compares to the likes of the .50 Alaskan.

Hey Dan, Ill put together a list of velocities vs boolit/bullet weights for you and post it here.
http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=85616
heres my origional post on it, we have come a LONG way on development since, including a nice gash on my forehead from last nights stint at the range.
speaking of this, maybe we should start a gashed forehead/eyebrow thread from scope bite, posts with pics only!lol

Ill put some info together for you Dan, thanks for inquiring.
regards,
Aaron

Well Im having trouble getting all my ballistic charts to upload, but here are some brief stats:

.50 Razorback
649gr api @2150fps
300gr barnes @ 3300fps

.50 Hushpuppy
300gr barnes @ 2600 fps kicks badly out of a light rifle
500gr cast @1850
649gr api @ 1525

None of these loads are showing pressure signs yet and are not max, when we find the max I'll post the results. HotGuns has played around with my Hushpuppy and will be designing a suppressor specifically for it. Im sure he wouldnt mind confirming some of this, as hi is a reputable member here.

This said, since I have spinal injuries, I generally stick to launchin 500gr cast at 1100fps. But it will do that with an 850gr cast too... with a little shoulder push.

Now I have to hold off buying the Beowulf.
I have to see where this goes.

.50 Alaskan:p

Tim, to further complicate your life there's also the 458 SOCOM, 450 Bushmaster, .50 Beowulf, 500 Phantom for AR-15s and then there's the 450 Marlin as well. For the AR-15 route, I considered the .458 SOCOM the way to go for big bore in this platform though I need to look at the .50 Beowulf more closely. Then the .50 Hush Puppy came across my radar.

For 300gr at 2600 fps, I'm getting 4502.66 ft/lbs, not 4878 ft/lbs.

Is my equation wrong? It's from the Lyman 49th manual.

bullet weight in grains * velocity^2

649gr api @ 1525
I was reading up on the 500 Phantom, which has apparently been discontinued, and the .50 Hush Puppy seemed very similar in performance until I got to the 649gr. Guess the .50HP has more case capacity as its case is longer in length than the 1.525" 500P and no bottleneck, so it crimps higher up on the 649gr?

Your calculations are most likely correct Dannix, I used the real guns calculator as opposed to the lyman manual, which i trust more, Ill get that fixed, Integrity is important to me, dont want anyone to think im blowing it up for sales. Thankyou kindly sir.

We still havent got to the max load on the 649gr for the HP. with my spinal injuries I cant shoot one that hot, so Ill have to wait to max it out untill I can get someone to do the shooting for me.

I can chamber some of these other calibers too. I think the 450 bushmaster is great. Id personally stay away from the socom tho, by the looks of the brass price and availability issues. Not a fan of rebated rims either. I guess i could neck the HP down to, eh?

Is there a parent case for the .50 HP? One of the things that attracted me to the .450 B was brass availability from .284 cases.

Take a look at the link on post #3. The case is 7mm WSM, cut off at the shoulder.

The function for calculating kinetic energy in foot/pounds ( E ) of a bullet is:

[ Weight(gr.) * Velocity(fps) ² ]

divided by:

[ 7000 * G * 2 ]

( G is the acceleration of Gravity = approximately 32.163 ft/s²)

{When publishing kinetic energy tables for small arms ammunition, an acceleration due to gravity of 32.163 ft/s² rather than the standard of 32.1739 ft/s² is used}

7000 * 32.163 * 2 = 450282

The simplified function is:

E = W * V² / 450282

Hope this helps.

Please let me know about the upper receivers. I've been looking at the DPMS slabside for my 6.8 SPC build and will be interested in purchasing within the next 2 months. Trying to put the upper together for hunting season.

I'd rather have one with the logo.

I like clean look of the slab side. I'm building the upper myself, already have the Bison Armory barrel and bolt.

BTW, have a couple of friends that were 82nd, many years ago.
