Anybody got a favorite, or a suggestion for a good cast bullet for a .300WinMag? About to buy a mold so need ideas. Prefer long-range accuracy.

I will suggest 311299, Javelina lube, Hornady GCs, the use of a medium or slow powder with a dacron filler and keeping the velocity in the 1900 - 2000 fps range. That bullet has the weight to affect a more consistent ignition with those powders while keeping the velocity in the most accurate range. It also is a better fit in the shorter neck of the .300 than most other bullets to avoid deep seating. 311299 with a BC of .377 is one of the highest and most efficient of the .30 cal cast bullets that can be driven that fast with accuracy. If you pay attention to the alignment of the Moon, Mars, Venus and the stars, hold your head just right when casting and tithe an appropriate amount to this forum then you just might push up into the 21-2200 fps range with decent useable accuracy;-)

311299 is also an excellent candidate for PPing should you decide to go to the dark side. Actually that may be better for what you want, i.e. "long range", with your .300.

With the current Lyman molds running a bit small you will probably be better off with the 314299 which is the same design as the 311299 just a bit larger diameter. When shooting 30 cal rifles this design was my prefered for accuracy.

Jim;

I had a Remington 40X in 300 WM that loved NEI 308-178-GC over just about any powder.

I wasn't shooting fast in those days so loads were going 24 gr of 2400, 24 grs 4227 and such like stuff. No fillers, accuracy MOA or less.

For long range shooting, since we're not talking full-power jacketed anyway, stick with something in the velocity range of 1500 - 1600 ft/sec and simply get enough sight to account for the the drop at the distance you'll be shooting at.

Pretty much any 30 caliber pill will drift something terrible anyway, and shooting at 2000 ft/sec + will only make it worse at anything I would consider "long range" ~ that is out there beyond 500m or so.

Good morning,
