View Full Version : Maven's Excellent Day at the Range

All, After finding several reasons why I shouldn't go to the range today (e.g., raking out dead grass in my back yard; sharpening my lawnmower's blade), my wife insisted that it was too nice a day not to. (She was right!) I dragged one of my K-31's* out with Ly. #311291's and Saeco #315's, both sized to .309" and seated to the crimp groove (2.63"?) and 2.83", respectively. The load was 20.5gr. WC 820 (AA #9 data). Both shot into about 1.25" @ 50 yds., which pleased me a great deal since -291 doesn't shoot nearly as well from my .30-30 or .30-06 (sized appropriately of course).

While at the range, one of my friend's asked me to try his Savage .22-250 (single shot, heavy bbl., Accu-trigger) since it wasn't grouping as well as it should with j-word bullets. It didn't do badly, but it should have put 5 shots into 1/2" with no trouble at all: It managed to throw 1-3 shots out of group consistently, perhaps because the bbl. isn't yet broken in and there was a rough edge at the crown.

After I went back to the K-31 for a while, he asked me to try his Sako varmint rifle (had a 36x scope), a.223, with j-word bullets. This rifle was different: I managed to put 5 shots into 7/16" @ 100 yds.! All in all, I had an "excellent" day.

Btw, one day I'll remember to take my camera with me so I can put my pixels where my mouth is so to speak, but in truth, it's one more piece of equipment to pack & unpack. I'd even have to learn how to, gasp, post pictures!

*As issued, but accurized as per Pierre Ste. Marie's instructions on the Swiss Rifles forum.

No need for a camera, Maven. I would be surprised if you couldn't shoot those groups. Getting down into the quarter inchers for two relays in a row (without using a BR gun) might require a couple of "proofs". ... felix

Try the 308329 in the K-31, the long ogive fits the no throat Swiss well.

Felix, I agree completely that 2 tiny groups would require photographic proof, especially since I usually don't get them.

4064may, Thanks for the tip! Currently my most accurate CB's in 2 "throatless" K-31's are the Saeco 315, Ly. -291, Ly. 311466 (also a tack driver in my .30-30) and the Lee C309-170R (which is too small for my '06). If I'm in the mood for more power & recoil, I'll use Ly. 311644, which must be seated quite deeply into the case, but is surprisingly accurate considering it's designed for the .308/.30-06 throat. 18.5 - 20.5gr. WC820 (Check the burning rate if you use it.); 22gr. AA 5744, or 47 - 49gr. WC 860 work very well in my K-31's with these CB's.
