Could post this question in a few different areas, but figured this maybe the best. Anyone have experience with the Lyman 378674 in a 375 H&H? I have a CZ 550 in 375 (1-12 twist) Hoping this bullet will size down and stabilze in this rifle. I have not slugged the bore yet and the rifle is basically new having only 80 or so jacketed reloads thru the barrel. I realize the boolit is a non gas check design, but I was thinking of pushing it around 1600-1700 fps. I really have no need for the mould, but like the idea of a heavy RN round. Not really concerned with the OAL of the cartridge as I'd probably load them one at a time anyways. Looking to use the round for "paper" elephants and the 200 yd gong at our range. Thanks for your comments/ suggestions/ opinions - Bill L

It should work fine. Those rifles have a 1:12 twist, which is plenty for that bullet. They also have a military style funnel throat which works very well with paper patched bullets. With paper patching you could run that bullet at full power. To get the speed you are looking for with a naked bullet, you most likely will need to use fillers to prevent leading but it should work. Something like 60% IMR4350 + 40% cream 'o' wheat likely would get you there. (Layered and compressed, NOT mixed together)

The bullet will work just fine at 1600-1700 fps and do it with a bulkier powder such as IMR 4759, Accurate Arms 5744, or maybe even IMR 4198. An IMR 4759 charge of 32.5 grains is to produce 1,759 fps and AA 5744 with 36 grains is around the same velocity being 1,725 fps. 36 grains of IMR 4198 will also give you around 1,717 fps with this bullet. COAL was 3.570".

All load data was taken directly from the Lyman 48th Edition Reloading Handbook with the test rifle having a 24 inch barrel. The big thing is to make sure you are sizing your bullets to the appropriate diameter and one should slug the barrel to check out the groove diameter.

This will get you going hopefully.

That blt works just fine in both my #1 Ruger, and my CZ. Wish I had the mold! Right now am playing with the Ranch Dog 235 in both 375's and it shoots great in both over 35 gr or 4198 with standard (not mag) primer. Will stay under 3" at 100 all day, and once in awhile will do 5 in under 2" at 100.

Appreciate the input - wasn't positive the boolit would stabilize since it's a bit bigger than most factory loads. Most of the jacketed loads, I ve been using have been the Speer 235s with 4759, just a blast to shoot and they're accurate in mine. I like the idea of a bigger lead RN and since I'm just putting them on paper, lower velocities are fine with me, especially since the boolit has no check - easier to load and easier on the shoulder - Thanks for the info - Bill L

I'm looking at using the same bullet in a future Model 70 .375 African Safari purchase.
