I shoot a 45 colt and a 44 rem mag
a lot of times I have the two at the same range session
I was getting down to the last of my shooting and had 9 44's left so I shot three and was loading the last three to make a full chamber and I noticed that I was shooting the 44 mag out of the colt
holy sheeeeet freeked out
other than the cases being junk there was no apparent damage done but what a wake up call that was

You are lucky that you had a weapon that held up with the difference. Would be interested in knowing what it was. Am thinking Ruger, but would like to know for sure.

I read about an editor of a gun mag having gone to a sponcered shoot and feeding a 44 mag a half a box of 41s. I once popped of a couple of 44-40s in my RBH 45Colts. No thrill there sideways bullets and fire formed cases is all.

I have done it more than once. 41 ammo in 44 guns. Not much anymore, though. One gun at a time to the range. Double pay attention to the box of ammo. Cannot go by weight of lift, like usual in MY long ammo. ... felix

Shot a 308 in a 30-06, makes a straight case out of it.

You ain't the first...or last...that did this! Skeeter Skelton did a column in SHOOTING TIMES 'way back when about shooting 44/40s in 45 Colts; 38/40 in 44/40 and 45 Colt; and ? IIRC someone mentioned doing 44s in a 45 in GUNS OF THE OLD WEST magazine awhile back.

Obviously while not life threatening, this is another illustration that you have to be careful ALL the time reloading and shooting. RUGERs...full size ones anyhow...will save you in this situation. (I saw a guy blow up a Colt clone at a Cowboy shoot...not a pretty sight. No injuries, but a nice little engraved single action became scrap metal.)

I know this has happened a few times but it was not a pretty sight is see what happens when you put a 308 in a 270. Not me but a fellow shooter. The Agentine mauser action held but destroyed the stock around the mag box.

My brother in law tested my M-29 Smith by shooting .41s through it. They were my mid-range loads, so little chance of damaging anything. They did make large diameter empties, though. I ran them through a Lyman carbide sizer and to my knowledge, I'm still shooting them. I haven't shot any Magnum level loads from the .41 in probably 20 years, so I'm not worried about them.

Stew

A friend fired a 25 Rem. in a 243, Mauser 98 action, He got powder blown back in his eyes, no damage to the rifle. I almost fired a 357 Mag. in an old piece of junk 38 Special. The mag was mixed in with 38 ammo and happened to be the last round in. My eye caught the different look as I closed the loading gate. I'm sure it would have disassembled that sorry excuse for a gun.

If I was in a life or death situation or very hungry I would shoot 41 mags in a 44 mag all day long if that's what it took to keep me alive. I feel safe with the 41's in the 44, now I have accidently shot 44 mags through my black hawk 45 and it held together allright altho the boolits keyholed in to the target. I would not recomend 44's in the 45. Dennis

looks like I am in good company
I was thinking as I started my range session that I had better be careful as to not mix them up
probably should have never thought that
just a little off topic but I have been seeing IIRC what does that mean ???

"If I recall correctly"...

I like to keep my ammo in different colored boxes. .44's in blue, .45 Colt in brown, .454 in orange..... and only take out ONE box per handgun... I won't have more than one box on the bench.

Well, I sometimes take two revolvers to the range -- but they are both 357....

Did you hit what you where aiming at?

I've always wondered (and I don't know why) when I read stories like this what the targets looked like?

Glad both you and your guns are OK!

Man I work for fired a .270 in a 7 mag, blew the stock out around the magazine, and gas in his face, left him unharmed but shaken.

Sunday at a silhouette match, I went to the line with my 32-20 contender to shoot field pistol. The first shot smacked the chicken dead center, but would not extract. I had to knock it out with a rod. I had grabbed the box of 32H&R mags by mistake. That case will probably be a little hard to resize.

There's this story about a 6.5 arisaka having been fired on pourpose with a 30-06' too. A 50s or 60s gun writer of some fame don't recall the name now. Supposedly the gun was no worse for wear. There was a couple of articals in the recent past that focused on mismatched ammo their tests were things like 30-30 in a 35 rem or 7mm/08 in a 270.

That was reported in the American Rifleman in the '50's. Somebody ran an '06 reamer up a 6.5 Arisaka. Commonly done with the 7.7. Anyway, the guy who had it took it to a gunsmith because it kicked too much. He had shot a deer or two with it. Gunsmith sent it to the NRA. If I remember right they actually fired it. Real tough action.

I try not to take guns with 'compatable' ammo to the range at the same time. If it fits it's the right ammo.

Shot a 44 full load in my srh 454 cassul. Noticed right off the get go that there was something wrong. Recoil and report were way different from what they should have been (both alot less than a 357 load). Decided after that that if would be safer to carry ammo in something other than my pockets.

Me thinks that it would be fairly safe. I doubt that there would be much pressure since it is all leaking by the boolit/bullet. Right, wrong?

I think in hunter ed class the other night something was said about confirming the correct ammo-gun combo. That being said ain't it amazing how strong guns are. Just don't try the next size smaller shotshell in a shotgun. That generaly removes flesh.

I was shooting my Mosin-Nagant 91/30 one day using cast boolits and 13 grains of Red Dot powder. I put the M/N away and got out my Hungarian M95 carbine. I had loaded some cast boolits for the carbine, and they were in a 50 round plastic box, same as the 54R loads. I loaded the 8x56r clip with 7.62x54r ammo and shot one round. I could not get the bolt to open. After tapping it with a piece of wood, it opened. The brass looked like a 8x56r case with hardly any neck. That is when I realized what had happened. I am glad I didn't shoot the carbine first. I smashed the brass so it could not be used again. I wish I had kept it for a reminder.
