This may seem like a dumb question , Can a 56-50 Spencer shell be fired in a 50-70 rifle. My thinking is they use the same basic case much like the 38 and 357.
40 grains of powder would be fine for short range plinking.

40 grains of powder would be fine for short range plinking.yes it can ,you just have to be vigilent about cleaning the chamber ,the rim diameter is slitly smaller but extraction should still be allright,acuracy will not be as good as a redused charge 50-70

I have fired 56-50 rounds in my 50-70 Sharps but accuracy is not was good due to the long jump before the bullet hits the rifling. I did it the first time to see if some dud rounds would go off in my sharps that would not fire in my Spencer due to light hits. They did go off. I have since modified my Spencer to give better hits to the primers and do not have that problem anymore.
