Lyman devastator load [Archive]

I just cast up about 100 devastators for my 44 mag. While looking for loads I came acrost one on gunloads listing 22.5 gr. of ww-296, this seems a tad heavy to me. The bullet weighs 273 grains checked and lubed, guns are Ruger sbh and srh both 7.5" anyone out there shooting this bullet, I only have 296, so please no loads for other powders. Thanks

That load is alright but 22 might be more accurate. Use a standard primer like the Fed 150.

I can't find anything on 275 gr. lead, 22.5 gr 296 with a 275 gr j-bullet is max or over max, depending on the referance used.

He has added the lube weight. I use 22gr of 296 with a 265 gr, 21.5 with 310 and 320 and 21 with a 330. All below max.

go to Hodgdon .com they list 270 gr 44mag and a 280 gr load for 296 maybe split the differance

I shoot the same bullet w/ modifed cup point, 25-1 alloy, it runs almost 270gr ready to load. I have not gone past 21gr of H110/W296 yet, probably won't. It shoots pretty good to 100yds in my RBHB. Velocity is right @ 1200fps, on good days it will stay inside 3" @ 100yds.

Just got back from the range with the 22 grain load. 1.5" at 25 yds. Seemed a little stiff in my scoped Ruger Red Hawk, wacked my finger with the trigger gaurd a couple of times, I've been shooting 20.3 grains of 296 with the Lee 310 gr. I am going to back it down to 21 grains and try it.
