I just set up my 550 to load for my new 30-30 Contender barrel. I did some searching and found alot of people were having good luck using 5744 and 4759 under my bullet (Lyman 311041). I tried both powders, and Dillons measure was horrible at throwing consistant loads with those powders. (I'm used to H322, Bullseye and other fine kerneled powders). I really would like to load these progressively, and have 8lbs. of 8208 staring up at me......
I know it burns a little faster than 4895, but would it be sacrilegious to use a benchrest powder in a 30-30? LOL. Really, has anyone tried it yet, and if so, could you share your data? I know it would flow better through the measure, and I have alot of it. Thanks-

Start at 21.0 grains. ... felix

You can use H322 data when found in the books. ... felix

From Hodgdon's pages......

There are better powders for cast in the 30-30 especially if you're seeking a reduced load. If you want to go 40-45K PSI, fill the case up with something slower.

I'm actually not looking for a reduced load. I would like to work up a load to use on IMHSA Big-Bore Silhouettes.

isnt that the powder that Hornady uses in their fxt bullet loads? i.m.o., if you have it, use it. as long as it is safe.

25 grains Re-7 or 29 grains 3031 or H-4895 worked best for my Marlin using BRP 311041's.My give away basic reloading manual shows 170GR sierra fp ,8028xbr 30.9gr - 2181 fps -37,500 CUP

Give your 8208 a whirl but if it's anything like the old surplus 8208, it'll perform best at 40K+ PSI. Your winter loads may need another grain or so to keep up to your summer loads too. When it comes to max loads in the 30-30 I prefer near 100% density charges. Anything less than about 30 grains of 8208 will give you too much air space for decent ES's. 31-32 grains will probably get you a better burn with a smaller ES but you'll also likely be over 40K PSI and will probably still have quite a bit of air space remaining in the case. I haven't worked with 8208 since the surplus market dried up so YMMV. My boolits were heat treated 311041's, so be careful.

I've used 8208 for 6 years now. I load 30g in my 30-30. Never had any problems with it. Regularly get 2100fps ish and no flattened primers or extraction issues. I've loaded ftx and cast.
