Have any of you ever machined out the the gas check portion of the 311332 mold to make it a Plain Base bullet. The idea popped into my head today and I wondered if any of you have done it and what the accuracy results were.
Thanks

Cisco, I did a old (1972) Lee 158 SWC 357 today but have not shot it, it was 151 grs when I was done. I got a new one last week, so what the heck, I wanted it for 38 spl. No real help with your mold.

I have plain based the 311413,an RCBS 150FN and a 311284.they all worked well, but no better than when shot as plain base with lube slobbered in the GC shank.I would shoot it first sans GC and see if it shoots as a plain base in your rifles. If it does send it to Erik Ohlen of HP Mold service and he can do an accurate job of taking the GC shank out.I shoot a pointed Modern Bond plain base of about 192 and it does very well in the 30-06 with 8.5 of Unique.Good luck keep us posted.

I was thinking of doing it to the Lyman #311041 for my 30-30, I have an old spare mold for that bullet. However, I don't know anyone that could machine it, or what it would cost. Also I'm not sure how well it would work if I did.
If you find someone that can machine it a PM would be appreciated.

I bought my 2 cavity aluminum NOE, 311332 mold with the plain base feature. Once cavity is a plain base and the other is a g/c.

The " numbers " ( as far as I'm concerned ) couldn't be better on my mold. Swede is making great molds !

I have not had any time to shoot these. You can bet that my next trip to the range will include loads with these bullets.

Here are some photos :

The nose on this one will definitely be riding the lands in my barrels.

I don't know about the 30-30 with PB, I made my molds for a GC. But have found just an alloy hard enough in my big bore revolvers do not need one. They generate a whole lot more pressures then my 30-30.
I have cut the BB out of a Lee .357 mold and accuracy increased a lot.
I would be interested in results with a PB, hate to pay for the unobtainium things. I think those things would kill Superman!
