Just got a reply from ADI (the manufacturer of H4227 / AR2205 in Australia). Believe it or not they couldn't give me any data using a 200 and 270 grain cast boolit with this powder
Both bullets are from the recent Mihec group buys. Can anyone help? I want more power than cowboy stuff, but must be SAFE! Start and max loads would be a bonus and MV if you have that info is also a plus.

Thanks in advance Rob

Any load that you can use in a Ruger or Thompson Center pistol is safe in the marlin provided the loaded cartridge will feed reliably. Load data for the .45 Colt in Rugers and T/C's are in most handloading manuals and are labled for Rugers and T/C's.

I have the 49th Lyman edition, an old 4th edition Hornady manual, and some Australian manuals. None of them give me what I need. They are either the wrong boolit weight, or the wrong powder or not cast.

They have TC loads, but again not using cast or H4227. I particulrly want H4227 data as I think it will suit the cartridge and this powder is alot cheeper than imported powders.

While I'm here does anyone have a link to a good reloading magazine? :coffee:

TIA ,

Rob

rollmyown,

I have shot a few pounds of H4227E in my .45 Colt Marlin Cowboy.
In Hodgdon's Data Manual 26 they show 26/H4227/1,375 f.p.s. in a 7" test barrel developing 29,400 CUP under a 240-250 gr. bullet.

In the Marlin's 24" barrel a 250 gr. cast bullet exits @ 1,720 f.p.s. with that load and shoots well.

Good morning
One thing I can attest to the Marlin CB carbine.. it will withstand far heavier loads than my 157 pounds of body can enjoy.
I use 1680 in my 41 Mag with a 265 grain GC and it will flat hurt me with a stout load and just a shirt. But they are nice little tools to carry about.

Thanks for the help guys. Have also signed up to "load data". They have data for the exact projectile and powder I'm using. Looks like an excellent recourse. Anyone else using it?

I've subscibed to loaddata.com for several years and find it a valuable asset.

Hope this helps.

I've got good accuracy from 4227 but use 2400 and 296,H-110 the most.

I've had good luck with 4227 under the Lee 300 grain bullet in my Marlin 1894 CB. The accuracy was very good and the velocity more than adequate for hunting.

W/W cases W/W L/R Primers and the Hornady 250 jacketed slug pushed by 21 grains of IMR 4227 is my current deer load. I shoot under 3" at 100 yards and case life is good. This is in a old 24" bbl CB, the one with the Badger barrel.

Hello again
Any load that is for a "J thang" bullet can be used for a cast boolit IF the cast boolit design and mix are capable of withstanding the pressure you are smacking it with.

Water's Pet Loads has a good deal on IMR4227 and cast.

I am resurrecting this thread as I recently acquired some IMR 4227 and have some "265gr Cast Performance" bullets that I want to work up a deer load for my Marlin 1894CB 45lc. Anyone want to share some experiences and keep the thread going.

Greetings
I do not have a Cowboy but do have a 45 Colt in other lever brands. The 265 Lee RFN GC will go through corn crunchers from near any angle at 1650 fps. I hunt with 50-50 (WW-range lead) and have complete confidence in that arrangement. I do not use 4227 but muzzle velocity being equal or more you will have no trouble. It will depend on the mix of your bullet and the nose shape. If it is flat and about .30 or more in diameter you will have no problems. The flat nose is the issue to put the permanent "thwap" on your next feast of back strap. The larger that flat nose diameter the better the energy transfer no matter how hard the boolit is. But I like 50-50. It still expands but is firm enough to power right on through unless the far shoulder joint is hit.
Next year I get to head north again to the river bottoms !

Maybe 4227 is all you have but don't over look HS6 in the 45 Colt it works real good. Al

I'm using 23.4 gr H4227 in my Rossi 92 w/ 255 gr. lee mold round flat nose. Around 1500 fps. Works for me.
