I have a Lyman 457124 mold, some IMR 4198 and a marlin guide gun with ballard rifling. I have slugged the marlin out at .4575. The mold throws .4585 as cast so I have pan lubed with 50/50 bees wax and JPW and do not intend to size. I have no intention of flying off to Africa so these will not get pushed all that hard. I hunt Alabama whitetail and hog so I am looking for accuracy not how fast the bullet will go. Does anyone here have any experience with a reasonable start load I was thinking about 27.5 grains as a start. I came up with this from reading umpteen dozen forum posts here there and everywhere. Does this sound safe?

457124 is a 405 round nose. An old Lyman handbook of cast bullets ;ists 28-30 grains of 4198 as giving velocity in the 1300 fps ballpark which is what the old Springfield trapdoors used. So 27.5 grains is plenty safe in a Marlin. It'll do the job on whitetail, hog and a few other critters. As for accuracy you'll have to see how it groups abd adjust from there. When you start moving up from the 1300 fps point, the recoil starts getting annoying. LLS

Yeah I plan to make this a light kickin hunting load. Two rounds at a time one in the tube one in the chamber. I jump most game under 75 yards where I hunt so as long as I do my part it's no problem. I know there are far better suited bullets for the guide gun, but hey I have this one so I might as well use it. I thought about hollow pointing this one myself. I have access to CNC milling equipment and a manual lathe with a four jar chuck. 20 bucks worth of tooling and I am good to go.

My original 1884 Trapdoor likes 457124 HP with 30 gr 4198. This load should be safe in any 45-70....dale
