Does anyone know what car battery cable terminals are made from? They appear to be lead, but I'm not sure.

Yup! Terminals are mostly lead. That's the only part of a battery that is safe to try to salvage and smelt.

Typicaly, they're lead.

DO NOT melt down battery plates. All kinds of nasty stuff in them.

Stew

Just so we're on the same page...I'm talking about the terminals on the cables. Not the actual battery. I think I would be scared to use any part of the actual battery. If they are usable, I may have another source of free lead.

The cable ends and the posts both are almost pure lead.
They are good to melt. Wash them good and DO NOT put in melted lead
The terminals can have hidden corrosion that holds moisture.
Just start off cold and you will be just fine.
