I made a deal with a big tire exporter last winter. Back then a quick look revealed three 50gal drums lined up like dots on a dice! I'm sharing it with a friend who I also got into casting. Summer has finally come so we decided to start moving it today.

When we arrived.... we were met by SIX 50 gal drums.... they were like over-filled with a small ehhhmmm mountian (?) on top... weights were literally dropping of off them. A lot of it is very old (lead weights have been banned for about a decade in Europe), so it's mostly lead. We moved 2 barrels today, and smelted a half. The owner wanted $50 a barrel so of course we didn't argue.

We calculated the weight of one of the barrels to be about 1300lbs . My friend has a tractor with lifting capability of 650lbs, and it could just about lift half a barrel. That's $0.038/lb haha Slinger is a happy man [smilie=p:

Moving all that sh** is really hard. And rendering all those barrels is gonna take forever.... BUT I have an Ace up my sleeve! I know this dude, he has an oven that holds 440lbs! You poor from the pot into a WATER COOLED 9lbs ingot mold. The SOB even got a chimney on it... how wicket is that!! I'll remember to post pictures :)

After the summer I think I'm set for a loooooong time!

Does this mean now there's gonna be a "How many pounds in a 55 gallon drum" thread?

Great score!

Awww you guys would send me cards in the hospital? You're so sweet :bigsmyl2:

We spent the last 3 days rendering down some of the wheel weights. That oven is really cool. It comes from an old printer, so some of you guys probably know the kind. We have a 10 feet chimney on it, which almost eliminates the faul odor. And the water cooled ingot mold is so cool. The ingots weigh 12lbs, and cool in a minute or so.

We picked up 2 drums the other day, and have smeltet down a little over one and a half drum. I swear, when I cough I can taste the wheel weights

I'm sure you're all waiting for some numbers, so here they are. After finishing today, we calculated the total amount we had smelted. It amounts to 2000lbs! I expect the last half drum to be an additional 500lbs.

Would love some pics of the oven. I'm intrigued by how it's designed.

Awesome you were able to score such a find!

Two things....
1. You might want to wear a disposable particulate respirable mask of the N100 rating. I believe that's an international standard.

2. You said "lead wheelweights have been banned for 10 years". OK, Boys in the U.S.. The writing is on the wall. If you don't know who your Congressman is, that's the problem. Go to their local office and POLITELY tell them ENOUGH.

well, i did have her pic years ago, and even saw her briefly in the 80's and she still looked good even then, but the the only time i saw her two outsized assets in the raw was that time in the 60's and i imagine they've kinda headed a diff. direction by now. gravity eventually catches w/everything, no matter how good the casting was. except for me of course. the old 12 ga still put the slugd down range as well as ever:Fire:
