View Full Version : Portable takedown target stand
Hang Fire

Hope this is the right section to post this.
As Wife and I go shooting at different places out in the desert, decided to make a portable takedown target stand.
Now this is nothing fancy, I just dug through my metal scrap pile and used what I had at hand. It could be improved in many ways to make it more aesthetic, but has worked so well, I have never seen fit to change it.
Parts consist of 1/2"x24" rebar grade stakes, 1 1/4"x18" thin wall fence top rail, 1/4"x16" all thread and wing nuts.

Looks like it works well in sandy soil - too many rocks here in the valley of the sun
my buddy Mike came up with this design

you still need to put sand bags or rocks on the legs if the winds up
you can drill holes in the legs for tent stakes but sometimes the ground
won't let you nail it down.

Looks good. and that size would be good out to several hundred yards.

Brilliant.
What about folks who shoot way high and 2 the right? ...
Be nice if the wood was cheap to ship. I could supply eveyone here with an unlimited supply from the drop off of my mill.

Artful,
I am leaving to sit on a hill under a pine tree for the week.
I will try to get some close ups next week.
Would you like dimensions?

No pics of mine I built from 1" PVC water pipe. The pieces of pipe aren't glued so that it can be knocked down for easy transporting. For target backers I use either cardboard or construction foam held on with screws & fender washers. Works well for me.

I did that at one time - then when the joints started getting too loose scored with my pocket knife to tighten 'em up - two problems I had was wind and brittleness with expose to temp extreames and sunlight.

I think there is an easier way. I made a bunch of these to fit the ISPC targets. You simply make a square out of 1" square tubing, and put a pocket on them to hold a
1X2. You can cut your 1X2s to any height depending on what you need to match terrain and target postioning. Simply staple your backing to the 1X2s.
I also use poster board. I cut out white silhouettes of the Hunter's Pistol size animals and use clear packing tape to tape them to dark poster board to use at the range. Chickens come a lot easier when you practice them at 50 yards instead of 40.
I bought a couple of big hooks from Home Depot and these hang on the wall nicely. They also go up and down in a heartbeat. Everything stores flat. Don't make the bases too small or they will blow over in a strong wind.

I harvest a crop of target holders in May and again in Nov , some times a few in between LOL
I pick up the Vote for this fool or that jerk signs
I do wait till after the elections
The stapled paper signs , with wire frame are the best
As you can staple right to them
But the new style wire frame and plastic sleve , work
But you have to fold a piece of card board over them and staple the sides togeather
When someone .....Err I shoot a wire
The whole thing can be recycled and or trashed
As part of my place is at the corner of a state road and a well traveled county road and the poleing place is a few miles down the road
I normaly harvest at least 4 red and 4 blue target holders every Nov
Every 4 th year they put out lots more
And I harvest the crop from several spots
So I normaly have lots of target holders LOL

Who said anything about taking them out of the yard?
Here is a bad picture of what I use.....it bounces around in the back of my truck most of the time but it works.

I suspected I wasn't the only one who "recycled" these eyesores.! :drinks:
I do the same thing, at least we get something good out of the politicians, and half the time they aren't collected for weeks after the elections.............steg
