View Full Version : Controlled Expansion Hollow Nose

I have come up with a hollow nosw nose design that limits expansion. This may be of interest to cast boolit hunters. I haven't thought of a name for it yet - Annulus Nose maybe? Perhaps this is an old idea and already has a name?

208gr http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/oo327/303Guy/HollowNoseDesign.jpg http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/oo327/303Guy/HollowNoseDesign3.jpg Larger hollow with nub out of sight.

The effects of that nub can clearly be seen on the expanded nose. This last one was intended for use on pigs and rabbits at moderate velocity so needed a quick expansion as well as plenty weight to penetrate a pig. It weighs 230gr.

That's pretty neat. What was the method you used to make it?

Hydra-Shok

Looks great :D , how did you accomplish it?

Ay caramba-- I hope you can think of a better name than that. :)

Looks like the post-in-cavity technology behind Federal 'Hydroshok' bullets. Not really "controlled explansion" as the expansion is not mechanically retarded, but more like "enhanced expansion" at low/moderate velocity.

Looks good, keep up the good work.

Looks to be swagged and then turned on the lathe. Looks really good but if you did like I imagined, you've got way too much time on your hands and are having a ball with all of it.

Maybe that's what you could call it, "ETF" for extra time fun.

"ETF"That would work!

Actually, that's how the boolit comes out the mold. The little pointy post in the middle of the hollow is the sprue remnant. The alloy is castinto the nose via a shaped funnel which steadies and directs the stream to the centre of the mold which helps avoid cavities and chill creases against the side of the mold. The mold does need to be perfectly vertical and the funnel must have the correct shape. The point of the funnel protrudes into the mold and air escapes up its side. Once the puddle has frozen, the funnel gets plucked off leaving a drawn point. The sprue then gets tipped out (I tip them back on top of the kitty litter to slowly melt back in). Casting speed is not too bad. The mold base is bolted onto the casting surface which is a thick aluminium plate.

The post in the middle does actually limit expansion to that of a flat nose after the rim of the hollow has opened up.

you use a 230 gr on RABBITS? damn...elmer fudd needs to get ahold of you quick! No, no. I dropped to 208gr.8-) The 230 grainers don't fit the magazine! Not with that huge hollow up front.

Actually, it's only the front bit that gets used on rabbit (and turkey - shot one already, beautiful performance. DRT with minimal meat damage) the rest of the bullet that's intended for pig just passes through.[smilie=1:
'Sides, one should always use enough gun!

Cats? I think you use a 110 gr. Speer jhp in a 30-06 (@4100fps) for them. Shoot 'em twice - if'n they wanna argue!
