Hi all:

I'm thinking seriously of getting into casting, and I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions for a newbie on beginning reading material. Books, online, either one, both.

I'm picking up bits and pieces here and there, but like reloading, it's something I want to read about carefully and do right the first time, if possible.

Any suggestions on a good starting kit of tools and moulds would be appreciated too!

I am a relative newbie to this game, only been casting about 7 months now. I read Lyman's Cast Bullet handbook and a lot on this forum. "goatlips" has a site that has lots of nice pictures that helped me out when I was still a little leary of this new game.

Read the Lyman, check out the site & get started, be safe. If you run into difficulties, post a thread here and you'll probably get replies before you can fire up your pot again. You could also do a search for a thread I started titled "Casting for Dummies"; I got a lot of good advice on that one.

Join the Cast Bullet Assn., they have a web site.
Get their 100pg.book and 6 a year copies of their magazine which is written by the members.
Lyman cast bullet handbook is useful, but out of date.
Lee's second edition reloading manual has good info.
Veral Smith's little book is very useful.

You can peruse this
http://www.lymanproducts.com/lymanproducts/images/Bullet%20Guide.pdf

And this, which is for blackpowder, the boolit alloys may differ.

Also, use the search feature at the top of the page and search for "newbie".

The "Art of Bullet Casting" on DVD put out by Wolfe publishing has reprints of casting articles from Handloader and Rifle magazines. Great stuff on there.

You can find it here:

Cast Bullet For Beginners & Experts by Brennan is a very good work and is available through the Cast Bullet Association. This and the Lyman Handbook are the primary works on bullet casting that I would recommend.
