Good morning all,

I am hoping that someone here has an answer to my problem. I have a P-series Mosin M-91 that needs .318" boolits. I have some in a bag and I have no idea who I ordered them from. I have searched high and low looking for a source. Can anyone here help out?

Diameter = .318" gas checked
Weight = I prefer 180 and above

I don't know where you can buy them, but there are several guys in here that I believe could make one for you. If you can't buy any maybe you can give that a try.

There were a couple of Group Buys that were run through Lee Precision in the past that were spec'd to drop @ .318" cast of wheelweights. One was a modified 314299 (shortened nose) and the other was a Loverin style. Both Group Buys were ran several years ago. I doubt any of those molds are still available.

You might ask around and see if anybody can provide you with slugs from one of those molds; or ask if someone has one of those molds that they might part with.

Hope this helps,

There were a bunch of group buys on molds as big as .316", and someone may have done one as big as .318". I did a group buy, and the bullets drop at .316" for me, but Dutch4122 said his dropped at .318".

All that I have right now are sized and lubed at .314". There is a sub-forum you can ask for these or other .318" bullets at:

These are not cast, but they are .318".

If you cast, buy a mold for an 8mm, (nominal size .323") and size it down. There are older Ideals that were speced for the original 8mm bore of .318", but good luck finding one.

I just had another thought. You could paperpatch boolits upto .318" to use in this rifle.

There have been several 319XXX bullet moulds from Ideal/Lyman over the years... sizing down .001 is no big deal, of course. IIRC, there is at least one of these in the bullet weight you seek.

PS If you can do without the gas check, the 319323 would be ideal for your needs. It has a slight taper, but will lose that when you size it to .318" :mrgreen:

Paper patching would work really well in your case, but you probably don't want to get THAT involved just yet--quite a process, though fun in its own right. Something in the .319-.320 range would size down easily enough. Option "B" would be to find something in the .314 range and polish it out to drop a little bigger. There are lots of threads here that would tell you how to do that relatively easily. I think I'd start with a lee mold (inexpensive in case something goes wrong). Just keep in mind if you go with the latter option, a .314 will call for a .30 check, but after polishing to a .318 you will need .32 cal (8mm) checks, not .30 cal., and that means you'll need to pay close attention to the base and how it fits the check. Not difficult, just takes a little time and patience to get things to drop a proper fit.

Aimlowsqueeze, I own a couple of those P rifles myself and each has a .3115" groove diameter. Which makes me ask, how do you know you need .318" boolets?

Those ones you have in the bag--have you tried chambering a loaded round with one of those in the neck?

Rangefinder is correct about the gas check shanks. Ideally, assuming all your measuring was correct, you would want a .318" bullet set up for an 8mm check. That would be a custom mould all the way, but Veral Smith for one could accomodate you.

FWIW, NEI makes 3 designs in .318", all at nominal 175 grains. - CW
