any one have any experience with a 350gr fpbb in 45-70,I am looking for @ 1500 fps ,using 3031.From a old lyman reloading manual it looks like 40 grns should do the trick thanks Doug

I have a Lyman 457122 which is the Gould designed mold. Throws them at 340gr with ww. Shoots quite well in both my guide gun and handirifle with 45gr AA2230C. Right at 1450-1500 over my chrono.

Lee as a 340gr fppb, I know several .45-70 fans who have the mold and are pleased with the results at 1100-1300fps, much above that, heat treated or gas checks are about mandatory to keep leading under control.

.................As mentioned, the 340 Lee works pretty well. I can't drive it as fast as the 405 RCBS, but then it doesn't have a GC and I think it suffers a tad from it's small lube capacity. I can't wait till the 350gr group buy moulds arrive!

IMR3031 is THE muscle powder for the 45-70. If you wanted that velocity with a slightly cheaper load you might consider 2400, 4227, SR4759 or 4198. It'd take a smaller charge that way. Just an idea.

Buckshop,I am going to try to stay with the 3031.I have a really bad right shoulder and have built up a NEF with approx 3#of lead in the butt.It weighs approx 12 pounds and the recoil is managable.

I worry about using samll charges in a very large straight sided case with out somne kind of wad,or Dacron thanks Doug

Canon, folks can and will argue forever about using small charges of fast powders in the .45-70, but a new barrel of an NEF costs less than one trip to a doctor. With your bad shoulder, put 12 grains of Unique under that bullet and shoot away. It's most unlikely that you will ring that barrel, and you'll be money ahead even if you do.

I have a friend that loads with TrailBoss powder. Only take 18grs of power or something to completely fill the cartridge. Its a rather low velocity out of his 45-70 if i remember correctly.
