Just got my 45-70 shooting the lyman 457122 boolit with a light load of H4198, my question is do you need lube in all the lube groves of that boolit going at 1200-1300 FPS.
Thanks Bill

Probly not. Best to see which method shoots best in your gun.

Lube them all and see how it shoots and keep track of the number of shots fired. Then try it again with top groove not filled and see if there is a difference with your gun and components.

At those speeds you probably don't need to lube all the grooves. I had a 457121 mold that had 7 grooves, if I remember correctly, and I ended up only lubing 2 of them. I started by lubing all of them then tried lubing one less groove until I had a lube star that looked nearly dry(not wet and greasy) and had the best accuracy. Bullet fit, accuracy and type of lube in YOUR gun will tell you how many grooves need lube. I sized mine to .460 and used Felix lube.

Only if you are using BP. Then you likely need them all lubed. Remember the age of this design.
