View Full Version : Mounting a scope on a gun, that is not tapped?

Howdy!

I'm thinking of putting a scope on an old Remington 511 (bolt 22lr) that I have not bought yet . . . some of the newer ones of this model had dove tails . . . I think after 1950 area . . .

What I want to know is if I get an older one without the dovetails, can I just drill and tap the receiver and mount a scope? Or is it an iron sight only gun?

I am not really sure but from the picture of one on gunbroker it looks as though there is enough meat there in front and rear of bolt opening....as long as the bolt has a short enough lift not to hit the scope I think you will be good to go on having it drilled and tapped.

Have had it done on a few.Scoped 521T makes a great small game gun

Good morning
I have a 44-40 SRC that was adapted to have a scope mount.
The rear sight dovetail was used and ONE hole was drilled into the receiver ring on top to mount the 6" long "Rail" that was dovetailed to acccept the weaver clamp scope rings.
You should be able to extend the rail-scope combination far enough back to not need a extended eye relief scope but still not get into the bolt handle lift situation.

Shawn - That's how I put a scope on My 511. Had it drilled and tapped. I put Weaver bases on it.

OK, Great!

Carl, Do you know would I use the 514 mounts, or the 513? as the 510, 511, and 512's are not listed, but I assume are the same as the 514?

I had a 514 youth as my first gun, I could hit most anything I felt like!

How much do you think it would cost for someone to drill and tap it for me? Do you think I could do it myself?

I had an old Winchester single shot tapped, and a rail installed that was just a thick 3/8ths dovetail and took any .22 scope rings.

Worked fine.... Not sure who made the base, possibly Weaver.

Brownells makes a 3/8 dovetail scope base for non grooved round receivers on .22's. This one is for a receiver .840 in diameter. http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/sid=1745/sku/No__840_4_Dovetail_Base
and for 1.00" receivers the PN is 080-030-104.

If you have a drill press just use a no. 28 drill and 8 X 40 tap to D&T it or because it's on a .22 you could just epoxy the mount to the receiver. That should be more than adequate to hold it.

Shawn - go to the link I put in my previous post and look under Remmington model's 10, 11, 12, 34, 341, 510, 511, and 512 mount numbers are 48043 and 48042. They are listed above 513 and 514.

Hope this helps

Great Carl, Thanks!

I guess I skipped over it!

Any idea why they have note #6 associated with it:
"#6 - May require bolt and/or safety alteration, otherwise firearm cannot function safely and properly. Consult with a qualified gunsmith."

Did you have any problems?

I D+T both my 511's. Just remember one thing on those- Weaver bases put the rear base on the recv'r, the front on the barrel. I didn't like that idea and mounted both mine in the recv'r. Those suckers shoot great. But if you do it my way get two rear bases.

Shawn - Just drill and tap, no other mods required. +1 Bret4207. I put both blocks on the reciever. After reading bret's post I had to go look at mine to see what I did. Put the scope on it 30 yrs ago. It will still hold 3/4" at 50 yds with the right ammo. (If I do my part)

+1 on the Brownells mount. I just JB weld them in place. Mounted one on an old 50's era Marlin semi that had a stamped receiver. Did that about 18 years ago and it still is in place.
