smokemjoe;
You've got me!? I have never seen a Fish/Turkey fryer that wasn't built to support a pan. Here's a couple of views of mine and you can see how the pan is supported (that's a large dutch oven with 100+lb of lead in it)

I bought a fish fryer instead of a turkey cooker, it has a smaller opening in the grate. The "grate" is actually just 3/8 steel rods that point towards the center, like a steel spoked wheel off an old piece of farm equipment. An inventive fellow like you should be able to come up with something Joe. I've actually removed some of the spokes on mine so that this little ladle I have will sit down in there a bit closer to the flame.

Is it best to get a fish fryer or a turkey cooker. The fish fryers I see are labeled "Not for cooking turkeys" and they have a lower BTU output than the fryers that are not labeled anything. So, obviously more BTU will get you to smelting faster, but what is the minimum BTU you would recommend?

BTW, I got my first cast iron pot today. It is 9.5" in diameter and 6" deep.

Thank you

Mine is 160,000 btu and it is about right. You can melt 1500-170# of wheel weights at a time and really get the job done.

I have a Bayou something, I think. I saw it in home depot. Not paying attention, I thought it was a turkey cooker, but it came with a fish frying pot. I thought the turkey pot was an option to be purchased separately. I am not disappointed at all with the heat this burner put out. I think it was $50.

My girlfriend bought me a cooker burner today at Lowe's. It was an open box and missing the regulator. However, she got it for $9.10 plus tax! So, I will purchase a 20 PSIG regulator and be one step closer to smelting.

Can't wait!

Don't forget to put a wind screen around it to help keep the heat next to the pot.

I scored a BayouClaisic high preasure burner with tank @ a yardsale......it cranks compared to my old set up. Its a little tougher to regulate the heat and the fresh air intake needs adjusting if running the burner on the lower settings. I plan on reenforcing the stand. It apears stable with 50ish pounds but I would like to beef it up anyway.
