Hello,

Just picked up a next to new C Sharps 1875. This will be my new elk rifle. Wondering which mold would produce a 400-500 grain bullet with a nice flat meplat in .45-70. Blackpowder load.

Thanks

RCBS 45-405, but it is a gas check boolit. Shoots great in all of my 45-70's

Get ahold of Bruce at BRP molds, he can get you exactly what you want at a great price and a very short wait time:

GREAT guy to deal with. He made me a three cav .462 mold for my 45-70's, one plain base, two gas checks, and one of them with a hollow point all for around $160 bucks and I had it in my hand in three weeks. Casts excellent bullets that are actually ROUND..............

Don't forget the Lee 405 grain FN. It is a plain base but casts easily and shoots well.

There is an active group buy for a Sweed Nelson made mold in the Active Group Buy section which offers a choice of weights, gas checks, and number of cavities. Here is the link:

Go to post #148 to see the boolit design and post #168 to check order status.

...............Get the Lyman 457121-PH, cast it of 30-1. Paper patch it and you'll have one of the best hunting slugs devised by man.

Not a very good or very large photo, sorry. It's a 475gr FNPB that Lyman designed for the Parker-Hale repro of the Whitworth .451" muzzle loading long range match rifle. Naturally their intent was (and how I shoot it in my Whitworth) for it to be shot as a lube groove slug. It drops from my mould at .452" and weighs just short of 480grs.

With 2 wraps of 9lb airmail paper, over the patch when dried it runs .459". For a slug going .460" if you need it, simply cast it out of 1 WW and 1 pure lead. It'll possibly lose about 1.5 to 2 grains in weight.

The Lyman 457643 has shot very accurately with BP loads from my 30" 45-70 to at least 385m. It was designed for lever guns, but its wide flat nose should make it a great hunting bullet. I had used the 457193 quite a bit in numerous other 45-70s, but think the other bullet is more accurate. The 457121 is also extremely accurate, but its long bearing surface uses up lots of powder capacity. WW cases hold 4gr more powder than RP.
