OK I've got two K31 swiss rifles. One is in original military dress the other has a diopter sight and custom stock that I have used in high power matches and for the rapid fire strings I've got a couple dozen swiss chargers. All the data I find in manuals list loads developed in the 1896/11 rifles with 30" plus barrels. My K31s have shorter barrels and I feel a much more robust action than the earlier rifles. Any of you members of the swiss brain trust have opinions on load data for the '31s? I primarily use 284 Winchester cases for my loading of this round and find loads listed for the 30/284 in the Ackley book that are far in excess of the loads for the Swiss. Makes me wonder.

I haven't looked into loading data much, but was under the impression that the K31 was a strong action.

My best cast bullet loads for the K31 are in reformed WW 284Win cases, F210 primers, Saeco #315 sized .310" and 2 grooves lubed with LBT Blue over 21-22gr AA5744. These worked very well with barrel sights to 385m.

The K31 is a very stout platform. I have shot 168gr bullets @ 2775-2825fps using a slow burning surplus powder, DP85. No hard extraction at that level, though primers were starting to lose their radius. The CIP Pmax is 3800BAR, which equals 55,000PSI. That standard was revised in 2000, so it's up to date, and was established by transducer, not crusher.

i'd shoot some gp11 over a cronoghraph and use the bullet weight and velocity as a guide.

i would say the 168 at 2800fps is probably over the limit. i can get 2750 right at the limit.

i see about 58.5kpsi at 2800fps......

i didn't even think about the surplus ammo and chrono trick.
i shot mine till i could get the load regulated with the sights at 1-2 and 300 yds.
it did seem to be dang close to 308 target vels though.
