Hi All, I got some powder from Hi-Tech back in 2002. On the 8lb container, Caution this lot of IMR 4895 is slightly faster, reduce load by 10%. The lot is 218(SND-L-500-21). Can this powder be IMR 3031. Ron

............If ya got some IMR3031 load a mild load of it, and duplicate it with the 4895 and check results over a chronograph. There is no standard pressure increase between powders listed on a burn rate chart. It might be like a slow lot of IMR3031. If so, you have a killer powder for the 45-70 :-).

What they're labeled, and what they are really like can sometimes be off. A couple years ago there was surplus IMR4198 available. I did my normal routine of load a light book load under a light boolit in a good bolt action. Man it was SLOOOOOOOOW!

So it was load up and see and IIRC I went up 2.0grs at a time. Believe it or not, labeled IMR4198 was sure acting a LOT like 4895! Results duplicated by several here on the board so it wasn't just me!

Still a real good useable powder though.
