i brought home my grandpas marlin 336 in .35rem today.

he died back in '01, and left it to my dad. he told me to take with me as he hasn't even looked at it since i shot it last time i was home.

my gramps has killed elk, black bear, pigs, and a butload of deer with this gun.

i dont really plan on shooting it too much, but kinda still want to have the capability to reload/cast for it.

i bought the dies, and a box of bullets for my p32, but only shoot 50 or so rounds a month, so dont want to "waste" primers on them.

do you have dies for every center-fire cartridge you shoot/own?

Yes I do, and do grandpa proud and shoot that 35, you'll not find a better short range gun.

Me too... In fact I shoot several calibers that I have never purchased a commercial round for. The first rounds I fire are reloads. At $20-30 per set of dies, it only takes less than 50 rounds to pay for them.

Yes, for every calibre and gauge. Also for one I don't have anymore.

I second the motion, shoot your grandpa's gun.

Everything except 9mm. I only have a P-11 in 9mm and can't be bothered to load for it.

My goal is to have both conventional dies and a set of Lee Loader hand dies for each caliber I shoot and any common sizes I don't shoot yet but may if TSHTF. I also want at least one mould in each caliber and enough alloy, brass, powder, and primers to reload at least 1,000 rounds more would be better.

"do you have dies for every center-fire cartridge you shoot/own? "

Yes I do, now I'm working on getting moulds for them.

All of them , except for my 9mm makarov, which I seldom shoot. As said, even have dies for calibers I don't own.

I have dies, or Lee Loaders or Lyman 310 dies for the cartridges I shoot and sometimes have all three in some calibers

Good morning
What a fine treasure to have and better be able to still use. I hope any of my firearrms that get passed down continue to be used.
Yes.. every firearm I have is used and reloaded for. I also cast all my own. I seldom buy ammo (UGH). I just would rather not be reliant on any more factories than needed in life. If I can make it I will. If it can be repaired it is as good as new to me.
My grandpa went on while I was down here and by the time I got back there was nothing left and no one cared enough to keep anything for us... but that is the way it goes.
May your days be blessed with good memories.

Yea... doesn't everybody? I thought that new guns just came with dies. [smilie=l: Maybe that was my rule.:?:

No. Obviously not for the .22s. When I lived in Ohio I did a lot of shotgun shooting, but that slowed down and I gave my shotshell reloading equipment away. And I don't have reloading dies for my 32s yet, probably won't buy them until I have run 5 or 10 boxes of factory stuff through to accumulate the brass. Haven't had the guns that long yet.

My rule of thumb is: save the brass like you have the dies. When you have enough brass to make it worth your while, buy the dies. "Enough" will be different for different folks and calibers....

Enjoy gramp's gun. Having a family heirloom to shoot is one of the more emotionally rewarding things about our hobby.

Yes. Except for .380 auto and 22 rimfire, I don't buy factory ammo at all--haven't for years. I think I've got a set of .380 dies someplace but never used them. I don't shoot that one much, so I never tried loading for it. Besides, those small cases flying out of an autoloader can be hard to find on the ground sometimes.

i definitely plan on shooting it, just probably not more than a box or 2 a year.

id post pics but my camera died.

Except the 22 lrs. I've 21 sets in 18 cartridges 12 of which I have paired up to arms. Plus 3 shotshell presses. 6 moulds cover every arm I have plus 1 except the scatter guns.

I have the dies and molds for every weapon I have except for the 12 gauge and the .22 LR, I did have a 22-250 and a 8 MM Mauser for which I had the dies and such. I sold off the 22-250 along with the dies along with a .32 WCF and the dies. I for some reason kept the dies and molds for the 8 MM when I converted it to a 6.5 x 55 MM sweede. I still have hundreds of cases and loaded rounds for that 8 MM and I have been looking for a decent 8 MM bolt rifle with receiver sights since and one day I will find it. Those Mausers with the sights in front of the receiver are not my cup of tea. I want a decent set of Williams or Redfield sights on one of those. Another rifle with a scope is not what I want nor need. I have all the calibers covered from .22 LR through 30-06 in my rifles but I would like a plinking 8 MM rifle to utilize those cases, molds and dies as I enjoy shooting the steel plates at ranges up to 300 yds.

A CZ 527 in 7.65 x 39 MM with a full stock along with a decent 8 MM Mauser are on my short list of I wanna's. Beyond that I will need to get a bigger gun safe.

You mean there are people with guns that they can't reload for? That's horrible.

well i found a set of OLD lee dies for it.

they are new, but have been on the shelf forever, priced at $15.00

Not only do I have dies for every caliber I shoot, in some cases I have more than one set for the same caliber. For example I have .44 mag dies in a Dillon toolhead and .44 mag dies to load smaller quantities on a single stage press. I also have neck sizing dies, crimp dies, and forming dies. I also have dies for rifles I have yet to own and dies and ammo for rifles I once owned. In some cases I just have ammo for guns I don't own.

Sometimes it's planned, sometimes things come in a trade, and sometimes I just keep buying the same thing because I forgot I already bought it. Like those three .54 Maxi-Ball molds...

Edited to add-If you really want to do honor to your grandfather, shoot and hunt with his rifle. :)

Yep, have dies for every caliber I own. I also have moulds for every caliber except my .22-250 and my 7mm-08. I will be getting a 7mm mould in the very near future.
Not sure about the .22-250. Hmmm....

The only factory loaded ammo I've bought in the last 35 years has been 22 LR and steel shot shotshells for waterfowl hunting. Just don't shoot enough rounds at waterfowl to justify setting up to reload the stuff.

I have dies for each gun I own and more, except for the shotguns which I don't shoot hardly at all. I own neither a .308 or 30-06 but have dies for both. I have several sets of some dies. I have a set of .45 ACP dies but no gun - yet. No mold either, yet. No mold for the 7x57, no mold yet for the .405 - bought boolets from The Bullshop. Multiple molds for most, of course.

I have guns that have never seen a factory round and I cast for everything of mine except 22
rf and would for that if I could reasonably reprime the cases. I am saving the brass to swage into jacketed bullets in the near future. I reload shotgun in 12, 20 and 410. I reload for all my guns and all but one of the guns for my sons, DILs, grandkids, and a number of friends.

I love to buy dies, i think it might be a problem i own dies for calibers i never intend to own, it's not a bad deal so sub 25$ i'll usually buy them just to have them. As it stands though take Granddaddy's rifle out and Shoot something with it.

for everything thats centerfire and even things I don't yet have (.40-70 SBN, .308 x 1.5 and 6.5-06)...and we won't even begin to talk about molds...and I do have a die for .22 rf but it only modifies the nose and bumps up the diameter....

I had a hard time finding Lee loaders for 6.5 Jap and 7.65 Argentine but I did it.

Let's see. I buy a firearm, and a box of factory rounds and dies (if I don't already have said rounds and dies). Then I can immedialtely shoot and reload. Call it instant gratification. Many times if I buy a rifle or pistol from a private seller there is a set of dies that go with it. So yes, I have dies for every toy in the safe. And some dies for guns I no longer own.

Yes, and for some I don't have yet but hope to some day

Excluding some 330/30 dies I sold with a rifle, I have never disposed of a set of dies. And every now and then someone says "Do you want these?" Of course I do. I don't have a gun in that caliber, but I might one day.

That's a great rifle you got there, and with family history. Shoot it heaps. Cast loads won't burn it out.

I own dies and mold for everything I have. Heck, I recently bought a new gun(.45 ACP) because I had too much brass(and dies, and 2 molds) sitting around idle. You know you have an addiction when having empty brass forces you to buy a gun.

Once I get guns that shoot 6.5x55, 25 Rem., 300 Weatherby I will have guns for all center fire dies, unless I find another set of dies for a caliber that sounds like fun. Would like 32 Rem and 35Rem dies so I could buy Rem Model 14/141 pump guns in appropriate calibers. Probably will never get a gun for the Weatherby dies. Buy dies when you find them cheap then you can buy a gun for them without any added expense.
