Has anyone spent much time shooting cast bullets from one of the bolt action 7.62x39 rifles?
I have a REM 799 and would like to shoot cast bullets through it. The mold selection is rather thin without going to a custom mold, so before I invest in a mold or two, I would like to know what some of the results are that you folks have experienced.

I have had good results with the 311466 152 gr in a Handi-Rifle.The Lee150fp works ok as does the Lee 155gc designed for the cartridge.

Another single shot Handi Rifle in 7.62x39 here that really likes the 311407-copy group buy 180gr Loverin boolit. Pushed to 1880 fps with H4895 & it shoots good, 1 deer down so far with it. The Lee 160gr TL boolit did good in it too, but I wanted something heavier, slower, and flatter tipped for hunting.

You looking for a hunting boolit or just in general plinking/punching paper?

Roysha,

I have the Charles Daly version of that same rifle. I have been shooting the Lyman 313445 (95gr SWC) sized .313" in front of of 3.0 gr of Green Dot for a plinking load. I have not fired these loads over a chronograph yet, but they put holes in paper.

The next time I load forthis rifle I am going to try some 120 grain boolits, just for the convenience factor of using a six cavity mold versus a single cavity.

Like Pilgrim, I've had very good results with the 311407 clone GB in my CZ527.

The Lee C312-155-2R has done very well up to 2100 fps so far. (mine cast undersize...Beagled to get .313)

I've also had some decent 50 yd. groups with a couple of plain base boolits at ~1200-1300 fps. The Lee 313-120-FP "Soup Can" GB (no difference between the checked and PB versions at those speeds) and a Magma 100 gr. RN designed for the 30 Luger both do very well, grouping around 1 1/4" at 50 yds. The 100 gr RN drops from the mold at .310, if I can bump it up to .313 it should do even better.

The NOE 130 gr SP has been a bit of a disappointment so far, I've yet to find the magic combination with it...still needs some work. I just received the HP version of that one, but haven't had a chance to try them. I have high hopes for both of these...we'll just have to wait and see what shakes out.

All in all a very nice little gun and cartridge combo...it's quickly becoming one of my favorite guns.

I've used 311359, 311466, and 311407 in my CZ-427 but, my favorite without doubt is a mould that Mountain Moulds made for me. A bore-riding flat nose design that doesn't intrude into the powder space and shoots regularly into slightly over 1 MOA, sometimes much less. As an added bonus, this boolit works extremely well in my .300 Savage.

The RCBS 165 Sil shoots well in my Ruger M77, and the design keeps the GC inside the neck, which I like. Makes a nice looking round too.

So far in my load development the lyman 311466 has shot better than the Lee 155 in my Yugo SKS

I've only fooled with that cartridge in an SKS. The C.E. Harris design boolits are about the only thing that works correctly in that gun. You can get molds in that design from a couple of manufacturers as an off the shelf item. I tried loping the point off of a few to give me a respectable meplat for coyote hunting. They flew fine & accuracy was good, but they did not feed at all. Even a tiny 1/8" meplat prevented reliable feeding. By the time I got up to 3/16" it was a bit of a mess. A 1/4" meplat on a 13bnh version of that boolit did give respectable terminal performance though. An 1/8" hollow point, 5/16" deep makes them devastating. If I had a single shot gun in that caliber, I'd opt for the hollow points for hunting small to medium game. 2400 worked well as a powder for cast in that cartridge.

If anyone has a Handi Rifle barrel in that caliber that they would like to sell, please drop me a PM.

Junior, who is a member here, has done a lot of work with a FAT boolet from a group buy mold (forget the number) in his SKS. Go to www.castbullet.com and look in the shooting or reloading section.

Just started working with cast in my 7.62x39mm CZ 527 bolt action rifle. This is from my very first time shooting cast, 50 yards.

Second time shooting cast, 100 yards.

Has potential, needs work, just got started, but yes, I believe it can do a great job when I find the right load jub. That's the Lee 160gr tumble lube boolit.
