I do not have a RCBS book Just 3 Lyamns and they show 1.272 and it will not work with the RCBS as it has a lip on the bullet So Anyone have the OAL with the 45rn RCBS 45-230

RCBS's Cast Bullet Manual #1 does not give COAL's!

Why are you trying to load so long? SAAMI sepc is 1.275" MAX. You can certainly load shorter. In fact, most 230grLRN will do well between 1.235"-1.270". Make a dummy round, pull your bbl out & drop it in. It should fall in & out w/o hanging up. Then load 10 & try them for feedi/function.

Make a dummy and load to the longest OAL that will cycle from the magazine into the chamber. I load my LRN from Missouri Bullets to 1.250 and that's my standard.

Don't assume the lip on the bullet....actually the shoulder, is a problem until you check to see if it is a problem. Some guns have short throats, and will not allow much protrusion of this "lip" beyond the case mouth to permit the cartridge to chamber fully. Others will allow some protrusion. The barrel is what determines this. Max overall is 1.275" and as said before there is no need to approach this closely as you're flirting with magazine fit issues.

As noted above, check with the "lip" seated out, and gradually increase seating depth until the round chambers properly. If of 2 ogive radius, proper overall length to duplicate ball will be in the vicinity of 1.260-1.265."

Don't take OALs from other, possibly dissimilar bullets of the same weight to use as a standard for this one. Differences in ogive and other particulars as well as barrel throating make this less than relevant when applied to this bullet in your own gun.

Make them just short enough to work in the magazine if you want. The shorter the OAL the more pressure you will get. Use a light load to start. MAke sure you try more than one in the mag as the first one won't give you any input.

YMMV

six,
I do know this - when I bought a spare mag (Wilson) for my 1911, the OAL max is listed by them as 1.250. I went with that and never had issues. I load the H&G 68, the Lee copy, the Miha copy and some 230 "ball".
And as fred said, best positive deal is take the barrel out and drop a loaded round in the chamber - if it doesn't protrude past the hood you should be good to go.. my .02. enjoy Mike
