I have a quantity of 250gr .454 bullets for a Colt .45 I no longer have, I would like to use them in my 45/70 Marlin for plinkers, how do I do this.:coffee:

IMHO You can generally bump a bullet up 2 sizes, 454 to 456, but if your barrel slugs out to 457 or even more, you mite be in trouble. Slug your barrel and if it comes out to 458, sell the bullets or buy a 45LC...

Heck, just send me the boolets and I will be eternally greatfull.....[smilie=1:

wrap a couple layers of teflon(plumbers tape) around them.Check for correct diameter. If alright .load and shoot them

I bumped up some 250 grain Big Lube(tm) bullets to use in my 45-70. They went from 455 to 459 with out any problem in my arbor press. Kinda did it by feel, but I am going to make a collar to fit over the bullets while pressing to get some consistency. Worked well in the Plainsmen side matches.

One more trick, you could beagle the mold as far as possible and then bump from there up to what you need. A lot of trouble considering you can probably sell that for close to what you got in it or simply trade for one. Try it in the proper section.

corvette8n,

Use an .06" poly wad:
The easiest thing to do is to use a .06" poly wad under the undersized bullet.
That will firewall the base of the bullet, allowing it to center itself in the bore for accurate shooting.

Bumping bullets:
THe best way I have found to bump up bullets is to take a fired case and make a "stop" from a piece of aluminum / steel ( rod that fits inside of the case, stopping about 3/8" below the case mouth.

To bump, with the seating die installed, place a bullet into the case and adjust the seating stem until the proper diameter is achieved. I have bumped bullets, increasing their diameters up to .007" with good results in a .44-40.

Good luck,

w 30wcf That sounds like a good one. I have paper patched and shot them, same effect as jhalcott and the teflon tape. Thought that was a good one to.
