I've been lurking here for several years, but haven't joined up. I have a problem with my new sizer, and figure this would be the best place to ask. I just got a Lyman 4500 lubrisizer, and I'm already having problems with it. I started out by casting and lubing some 250 gr. Keiths for the .44, and have absolutely no complaints. Next I was working on some 125 gr. .357's, and I can't get the lube into the grease groove on the bullet. When I press the bullet into the die and bring it back out, I just have a clump of lube at the bottom of the bullet. I've never had this happen to me on the RCBS and Star lube sizers I have used before. Is there a problem with the machine or the die? Help please.

Adjust the screw stop on the machine at the bottom, it doesn't sound like you're getting the boolit deep enough in the die.

What Trey said, I'll bet. That first row of lube ports is lower down the die body than ya think.

shooter75126,
Welcome.

In addition to the above, which is the most likely, too much pressure can be the cause, as well.

What I do is put the boolit next to the sizer die, (out of sizer of course) then line up the boolit with the spot I want the lube to come out and mark the top of boolit even with top of die. Then set the stop so the mark is in the same spot when the boolit is pushed down. Works every time. I also noticed it works much better if I size the boolit then bring it up and then push down again and lube it on second down stroke.

If the bullet goes to deep into the die, you get lube on the top of the bullet. If the bullet goes too shallow, you get lube on the bottom of the bullet. The depth adjustment needs to be corrected, sometime you have to fiddle with it just a tad.

Thanks guys. This is my first go 'round with the Lyman, and although it's a lot like the RCBS, there are a few things I haven't figured out yet.

Welcome aboard.

Another new poster just had a similar problem. You can see his thread here - http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=80994
