What is the "standard" quite load for 30-30 using a 00 buck pellet? Is it 1.5gr. Red Dot? I used 2.6 and it was pretty loud. Have always heard that there were really quite ways to shoot the old "dirty 30".

Faster powder should be better

It's hard to get much faster than Red Dot! I'm sure others will come along with more info but I think the route to "quiet"is heavy and slow. You just want enough powder to reliably clear the barrel.

i played with that some , and want to say 00 buck is about .323. i don't think it will start in the case, but some 00buck may be smaller. i used 0buckshot mine was .311, i did'nt size the case just reprimed, and used 2gr bullseye. accuracy stunk! with the cost of primers, i'd rather use my trusty ole .22lr. sure is cheaper, and you can hit what your aiming at.lol:sad:

I loaded some cast bullets over trailboss powder in a 45/70, and they were very, very quiet. Keep them subsonic. Try a min load of trailboss and see if you approve.

8.5 is barely making supersonic in my Marlin 336 in 30-30 with a 165 gr Lead boolit. 7.5 should do it just fine.

My buckshot is a cast Lee mold pellet that drops at .319 and I run it through my .309 sizer using the sprue flat as a base.

Paco Kelly's advice was to use as heavy a boolit at possible, never with a gas check. You might go heavier for a quietier load.

My plinking and small game hunting load for the 30-30 is a Lyman 31108 115 gr flat point sized .312 over 6 gr of red dot. I have been using this load for over 35 years and it shoots excellently in my rifles. It sounds like a 22 RF HV round going off and has considerable knockdown on animals like raccoon, coyote, rabbit and is OK for squirels but I hesitate to shoot it at an elevated target unless I know that there is like a tree trunk in back of the target. It also works very well on grouse.

Played around with a lot of round ball loads, and some of Paco Kelly's quiet loads. Have shot RB in 30-30, and a lot of multi ball loads in straight wall cases. I like the ref to Junior Dourghty's info, and have shot his 2400 and Unique loads with similar sucess, but only to 25 yds. I size RBs to .311, roll them in lee mule snot, and seat them just deep enough to be able to crimp them in. Most stayed around an inch or so at 25. Have also played with Trail Boss in a number of ctgs. but haven't tried it yet in 30-30, but wil one of these days. It is great in 45-70, and ought to be good in 30-30 as well. Haven't tried it with RB, but with about a half a case load or so of it under a round ball, bet you would get very little report. Let me know how you do with it.

Not so. V's N310 is way quicker than Red Dot.

What you will need for a fairly quiet load is a low muzzle pressure [<35 bars] at a reasonable subsonic MV (600 to 1050 fps). In order to get that, stick with N310 and the smallest cartridge volume you can get ~~~> the larger the cartridge, the higher the muzzle pressure at any given subsonic speed. To learn about this and work up your best option, get and install QuickLOAD [available from NECO at http://www.neconos.com/details3.htm ].

Basically, the 30-30 is on the BIG side for this application. Be VERY careful of your N310 loads, as this stuff is way-scary-fast, so it is very easy to get to a destroy-your-rifle pressure and still have LOTS of room left in the case.

Zeek--I would respectfully disagree. The Hogdon Burn Rate chart shows N310 at # 3 and Red dot at #6 along with Bullseye 700x E3 etc. All are very fast powders and when they are that close together on the chart the load and cartridge they are used in determines which is the faster powder. Burn rate on a chart is a closed bomb test to give a basic reference and under those conditions n310 is faster than RD but "way quicker", I don't think so.

I've had real good luck with ~2.8 grains of Bullseye under a 0 buck (.314") unsized and pressed in on the edge of the bench in both 30-30 and 30-06. It's rimfire quiet, longer barrels = less noise. It'll do cloverleafs inside of 25 yards and about 2-3" at fifty.

My favorite load is the Lee Soup Can 115 grain over 2.8 gr of Bullseye, gets ~850 fps out of my 336 CB and is very accurate, out to fifty yards it shoots close to point of aim using my hunting load zero.
