i went to a couple of sites..no luck.

what i know...

308 win

no visible mark on lever boss

bbl is marked 20

rcvr is marked Q

ser # is b547xxx

20 inch bbl

no mag

brass button cocked indicator

lever latch

i got 1950 when I LEFT OFF THE B IN THE SERIAL NUMBER,
but got invalid when i used the b.
and yes it was the first place i went to.

all of which is why i asked here.

The .308 wasn't commercially available prior to 1955, and not chambered in a Savage 99 until 1957.

Since the change from the lever safety to the tang safety was generally completed by the early 1960's., a WAG would put your rifle's DOM somewhere between 1957-61.

Ya, I saw the same thing with that prefix. I even poked around on the site and forums where similar questions were asked. Including some other sites. Really no good answers nor easily accessible later model serial records. A possibility brought up there was to contact Savage directly. Obviously :) an original "308 Win" couldn't show until late 50s early 60s.

current savage management denies any savage guns exist prior to thier take over in 1980'S ???

ok here is what i got on the 99E. ...22 hi power..250-3000...30-30.....300sav. or 303sav..22 inch barrel mfg from 1920-1936

99E carbine .243....250 sav......300 sav...or 308 22 inch barrel pistol grip stock 5 shot rotary mag. mfg from 1960-1982

547xxx serial numbers says 1949 year of mfg.

I have looked at a few 99s in the past and tried to tie down these later model DOMs. Always frustrating. Just stumled across this small discussion board item. May be of interest.
