Awhile back you brought up about the 22 magnum not living up to it's reported velocity. Well I've dug into that some. You're right. Layne Simpson was doing a test between the 17mang and the 22 mag (by the way the 22 mag won...more available ammo, cheaper ammo, more punch at both close and longer distance, and just as accurate out of a quality rifle) and he chronoed some of the new stuff and it was below the 2000 fps claim. Well, he had some original 1960 Winchester ammo and chroned it and it was 2018 fps out of a 16.5 inch barrel. It also was 200 fps faster then most 40 gr ammo loaded for it today. So apparently they did tone it down some. Wonder why?

I found that out myself some years ago when I Chronied (?) it. Possibly years ago when it was fresh and exciting, some over-enthusiastic bubbas rechambered some weak .22 LRs for it and did some damage. Yes, I have a nice Marlin 883 Stainless Laminated now, wonder if I'll ever use it? I just find my Contender Carbine in .223 so much more useful.

I have a Marlin M783, 22 in bbl , the w-w super X 40 gr hp does 1878 fps, the Fed 50 gr classic does 1536. The rifle has taken several deer and one moose( not by me), but I can shoot the 223 for the same money.

I have a Cooper mod 38 in 22 CCM and can match the velocity of that WW 40 gn hp but with a 55gn cast. I get over 2100 shots per lb of powder so is very affordable to shoot. Did a test last week with a 45 gn NEI flat nose 3.3gn 800X penitrated 5 one gallon milk jugs and went through the oak pallot behind. The first two were shreded and the rest pearced. It is everything we ever wanted from the 22 mag but gives the ability to tune the load were the RF didnt. As for the brass I stopped counting after 50 reloads. At $.50 each that works out perty cheap per load. Not a good beginer cartridge though as a .10 gn of powder over a top load will ruin a case quick. This is my idea of a perfect cast boolit cartridge.

BS; that CCM would be a neat little round, talk about economy. If I ever get the chance I'd like to try the hornet. The old 22 mag goes out about once or twice a year now- grouse and gophers, although my oldest brother used a Mossberg 22 mag as his primary deer rifle for many years !

I love my 22 Hornet. I only wished that I could have owned one growing up as a teenager when I use to hunt groundhogs heavyly. Great little round. I'll have to admit the 22 mag is pretty cool also. My best friend did have a 22 mag when we were growing up and hunting groundhogs.
