I just found this site last week and I love it.

Just got my first lever rifle, Marlin 1895GS 45/70. I have a lot of questions on loading for it. I'm not new to reloading, been loading for rifles and shotguns for quite a few years, but I've never loaded for cast boolits.

This will be a hunting rifle used for elk, moose, deer and bear.

Looking forward to any input to make this an enjoyable endeavor.

you should be able to read what you need to get started with that gun.
questions come easier at that point.
welcome to the chaos...R5R

Welcome BN, you will enjoy that rifle and calibre. I load for an 1895CB. I really like it. I been using the Gould bullet for our little whitetail deer in Ark, but you will probably want something a little heavier. Say 420 to 500 probably. Go to search at the top of the page and type in 45-70 or something like that and it will bring you a ton of info.

The 405 gr. boolit will be plenty medicine for any of the game listed. I would go with a gas check design for the upper velocities you can use in that gun. I personally use the Ranch Dog 350 and 420 gr. moulds, but they will be hard to come by now. I also prefer SR 4759 powder. We are shooting a Marlin Guide gun.

Welcome BN. You happened to pick one of my favorite guns, the 1895. Without a doubt there are other members here that have experience with them and we all will be willing to aanswer any questions you may have.

Thanks for the welcome.

I'm starting out with a 405gr RNFP cast boolit by Cactus Plain, Rem. cases and CCI LR primers. I just need to figure out what powder to use. I have a can of IMR 4895 on hand but the data for it that I have is for a 400gr jacketed load.

Powder is tough to get here right now. Have a Bass Pro Shop 5 minutes from home but they never seem to have any powder on hand when I'm there. Next closest place is Wholesale Sports, an hour away and when word gets out that a powder shipment is in you better be standing in line when it comes off the truck.

Go down to BaBore's post in the Vendor's section. He's making the group buy 460420 FP that is one hellacious boolit for the 45-70. Check with him to see if it's too long for the Marlin, though.
