Hi.

I have a 311466 that has been bored out to throw at .315 for my .303 British. Shoots like a house on fire around 1600 fps with light loads but I want to develop a +2000fps load for long range work.

I am up to 2400fps with 46gr of W748 and no leading using HTWW but accuracy is not flash.

What suggestions do you guys have for generating high velocity loads in medium cases that produce good accuracy?

Jeff,

Slower powders are easier on the bullet base during acceleration. For that weight bullet try 4831 or RL19. Top velocity and accuracy should occur at about 95% fill with the remainder PSB. Should be about 58 grains with .7cc if you have a set of Lee dippers. This will depend on seating depth of coarse, so just make sure you have compression to keep the PSB seperated.

Don't over look a pistol primer to start the fire off .... slow.

Can you share the method used to bore out the mold. I need to produce the same dia. Any info will be of great help. JB

Sure.

I very clever engineer and fella shooter painstakingly sets it up in his precision lathe and takes just a wipe of metal out of the 'grooves'.

It is a double cavity and he made one of the cavities into a truncated flat nose for me that my LE No4. MK2 LOVES!

Jeff, I would not overlook a harder boolit either. Water quench or heat treat.

JB, have you tried beagling yet? sundog

HTWW = heat treated wheel weight.

cheers

No, I have not tried beagling the lee 312 mold to 316. I may try it but to be truthful the idea of casting an egg shaped pill intentionally then trying to round it out with a sizer and smearing the bands does not excite me. I know that the gain in having a pill of the proper size may counter balance any distorsion suffered by the reforming to a cylinder may be all that I want but I am not in a rush to go that route. I may, as I said. The good thing about beaglig is that it not permanent. still two sides 316 and two 312?? (@) kind of thing.. I am sure some can give me performance data to trump my concern. JB

Jeff my No1 Mk111 likes 40 grains of 2209 behind CBE's 225 grain boolit cast out off ww,and tin with a bit of shot added and dropped quenched. Velocity is 1950fps felix lube used. The only problem is that it knocks you around in the prone position after a few Pat

Try those out of round boolits. Beagle them so they just fit and "Oversize them so the lube is just put in the grooves. They may shoot, you may be surprised.

My 311284 is about .003 out of round and it shoots fine.

Jeff,

I used to shoot a .315 bullet in a Ruger #3 .30-40 Krag. Not exactly the same as your set up, but maybe pretty close. I used the 31141 heat treated to 24+ bhn and gas checked. Sized and lubed at .315 with Gray #24 lube. I used Rl 19 and topped it off with shotgun buffer. Velocity was at 2400 fps. This is pretty much what Bass Ackward is suggesting, except I used a large rifle primer. I don't know what you call long range, but this combination was a reliable performer on deer and antelope at 250 yards.
