Very happy to have picked this up last week. Still need a few more points to "go out" with the rifle. Earned with a rack grade M-9 Beretta. Gotta love the Marine run matches. Everyone uses the same quality of equipment; lets everyone start on an even field. Forces you to rely on plain old, good shooting. Means you won't be shooting an old beater next to a guy who has a $6,000 race gun.

How many other military distinguished shooters frequent the board?

Way to go Marine!

I tried to get into the match shooting when I was in. Consider yourself lucky that you have a unit that allows you to shoot.

The Navy doesn't have an equivalent award, but they do have Expert ribbons/medals for rifle and pistol. It's an annual award. Anyone scoring Expert three years in a row may wear the ribbon/medal permanently. Miss a year and you start over. The hardest part is finding a place to shoot and the firearms to do it with. Certainly, there are no ranges aboard ship. Most bases have a pistol range, but few have rifle ranges. Then there's the difficulty of getting ahold of firearms and Uncle Sam's precious ammo. It's a real feat to pull of Permanent Expert in both disciplines for almost any sailor except SEABEES and SEALs, due to this logistical obstacle course. I hold both awards. I don't remember how I did it, but I think I got the Pistol award while on active duty. I think I had to wait until I got in the Reserves as a small arms instructor for the SEABEES before I got the Rifle award.

Anyway, congratulations on the award for your skills! Your medal is purdy-er than mine.
Regards,

Stew

P.S. I did mine with a .45.

Congratulations. Making Distinguished is a proud moment. I have a similar medal - except mine says 'US Air Force' across the top, and I got it 40 years ago.
