Greetings gents ...

I know a few of the guys who hang out here (howdy JohnH, Jeff223, and LeftoverDJ :drinks: ) and have lurked for a while myself, but I have to make a post today as I have hit what I consider to be a motherlode of casting equipment.

I should tell you, that I have never cast a bullet in my life, even though I have shot thousands of them.

This "find" may be the nudge I have needed to get into casting myself.

To make a long story short, I came into possession yesterday of the following molds. Those that I have been able to find a reference are noted with weight of bullet and style next to the mould number. The others I am still trying to get information on and any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Lyman 429348 (2 cav) 183gr WC
Lyman 429244 (2 cav) 255gr SWC
Lyman 357446 (4 cav) 162gr SWC
Lyman 358429 (1 cav) 170gr Keith SWC
Lyman 358495 (1 cav) 141gr WC
Lyman 358495 (4 cav) 141gr WC
Lyman 457130 (2 cav) 145gr Collar Button
Lyman 358091 (4 cav) 150gr WC
Lyman 445599 (1 cav) ?

Ideal 358250 (2 cav) 158gr RN
Ideal 457191 (1 cav) ?
Ideal 358315 (1 cav) ?
Ideal 358495 (4 cav) ?

Along with these moulds, this fella also gave me over 400 pieces of 44special brass, 300 pieces of 44mag brass, and about 150 pieces of .357 brass.

The grand total cost I paid for all this .........

.... not one dime. Free .... nothing, nada, zip.

I feel like I should go buy a lottery ticket today.

WOW! What a generous gift. I'm just starting at this too, cast my first bullets today. Looks like you're well set up to really get into this. Share some photos when they're available!

And again, congratulations - I think I'd buy that lottery ticket too.

MtJerry:

You'll get good info on the other moulds - that #457130 is a NICE find - and can look up most of what you need on the CASTPICS site www.castpics.net > Research and Development > Lyman moulds. That #445599 may give you pause; it was a 250-gr. hollow-base for the .45 caliber "Hopkins & Allen" underhammer rifles and carbines made by Numrich Arms around 1960. The #457191 is a 300-gr. FP PB for the.45 "Express" cartridges like the .45-90. Nice find!

Welcome Jerry. Good find, but I guess none of the other guys had the heart to tell you ALL those moulds are defective. Thats why they were free. You'd better box them up and send them all to ME, post haste. I'll put them to good use..... uh, I mean, destroy them so no one gets hurt by them. Yer pal, Bret

Tpr Bret.... could these be considered contraband and held in custody untill the hearing?
Welcome Jerry, great find, enjoy them. I'm sure someone here can steer you to a pot and other things you are sure to need

There ain't no mould so weird that somebody somewhere ain't in need of it. That .445599 sounds like just what you need to get a .44 Bulldog (Not the Charter Arms version) or an 11.75 Montenego shooting.

I dunno Jeff, this one is a 204gr GC hollowpoint that will may just fill the nitch created by the bullets Lamar made for me.

Thos 204gr'rs he sent me shot beautifully and if I can take some of the temper out of this one and make it expand a bit ... there will be dead critters ... lots of them.

Got Lead ? ;)

Iff'n that 204 is a hollowpoint, seems to me it must have been done after it left the factory. That's quite a haul you got yoursef no doubt. Now ya got to quit thinkin' 'bout it and do somethin' with those idee's you've had of castin'. Enjoy 'em, they'll give you many good years service.

Thanks for all the kind words. I am still in Florida as I write this (I live in Montana :Fire: ) and won't be back home until next week.

After I get settled from vacation, I will indeed get to working on making some boolits :-D .

I will be asking LOTS of questions, as I have a few things I have to gather before I can get up to production speed.

I have some lead scrounged ... I have a nice cast iron pot to melt and make ingots.

I need:
mould handles
pot to dip from, or pony up and buy a bottom pour.
sizing equipment.

In the meantime, I will be doing lots of reading ... :coffee:

Congratulations! What a deal and for free!!! To place a dollar figure on those moulds, I would say $250 at the least. Now, if they include the handles, add 50%.

I'd trade handles for that 357446 if you're interested.

MtJerry

How many sets of handles ... that is a 100 +/- mould.
