You better get a lot of it. I allso melted mine 2 days ago. I had a reguler size garbage bag full of lead. It melted down to a third of a pot.
Be carefull if you get the smocks the X-ray techs wear. They smoke like a chimney. I had to start the top of the pot unfire to hurrie the process.

kbstenberg is right. A lot doesn't go very far. I had a garbage bag full and it made 25 lbs of ingots.

I know this is a few months old but I had the same question. Here's another. Is this pure lead....it give me the impression of maybe a fine lead film sandwiched between two layers of foil or maybe even tin.

Anybody know?

It is actually a foil made from lead. It is not pure lead, I believe it has some tin in it.

Also has some antimony in it as my ingots "ring" when dropped on concrete. I checked some for hardness a while back and IIRC it was around 11 bhn.

My dentist has gone 100% digital. No more films.

There are 2 ways to see the inside of your teath. The old way is to X-ray the teath. The foil that the film comes in is lead.
The other way to take a picture of teeth is by computer immaging.

What do they Dental Lead for? They're covers for the little x-ray film squares I believe.

Are dentists still using the shields? I live right smack dab in the middle of podunkville and my dentist switched like 4-5+ years ago.

I must have an "old school " dentist. I live about 20 miles from Buffalo NY and he is still using the lead foil type.

When I picked up last week, 3 of 7 had already gone digital, and the other 4 are in the process. Looks like another source is drying up fast.
In all I got almost 11 lbs instead of the 26-28 i used to get. I guess that's progress in reverse.

Kodack is a common supplier of Xray dental lead shields... The composition they use is
Lead >96%, Tin 1.5% +/- 0.1%, Antimony 1.5% +/- 0.1%.
